Job Description
About the Role
The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is seeking an accomplished clinical leader to serve as Director of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and Associate Chief Clinical Officer.
In partnership with—and jointly reporting to—the Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Clinical Officer, this role provides strategic, operational, and professional leadership for Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and other advanced practice clinicians. The Director ensures optimal utilization, quality, compliance, and professional development of APPs in support of high-reliability care delivery, the academic mission, and organizational performance.
This leader works collaboratively across UMMC, the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), partnering with physicians, nursing leadership, APPs, and operational leaders to advance clinical excellence, access, and patient experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a senior clinical and administrative leader responsible for the strategic direction and performance of APPs across UMMC.
- Design and lead clinical services that achieve quality, safety, patient experience, volume, and cost objectives.
- Develop and manage operating budgets, productivity standards, and utilization management frameworks for APP services.
- Collaborate with medical, nursing, and academic leadership to project program growth needs and future clinical service requirements.
- Establish and maintain governance structures to support policy development, professional practice standards, and quality oversight.
- Ensure compliance with professional standards, scope-of-practice requirements, and regulatory and accreditation expectations.
- Standardize models of care, role delineation, and scope-of-practice optimization for APPs.
- Partner with Clinical Service Chiefs, Department Chairs, and dyad/triad leadership to develop and execute APP-related clinical strategies and initiatives.
- Lead initiatives focused on improving quality, safety, patient flow, access, and clinical outcomes while reducing variation and waste.
- Provide clinical consultation and recommendations related to cost-effective resource management and operational efficiency.
- Participate in case reviews, data analysis, and performance improvement activities to address patient care concerns.
- Serve as an active member of the UMMC Executive Council.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of organizational priorities.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree with completion of a Nurse Practitioner program or Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing required for Nurse Practitioner candidates
- Active licensure in the State of Maryland
- 7–10 years of progressive clinical and leadership experience
- Demonstrated experience leading large, multi-specialty clinical teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate (DNP, PhD, or equivalent)
- MBA or advanced business training
- Experience in an academic medical center or integrated delivery system
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
- Proven track record of success in healthcare leadership roles of increasing responsibility
- Ability to operate at a systems level and collaborate across disciplines and clinical specialties
- Strong understanding of service quality management and high-reliability principles
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Compensation:
- Annual Pay Range: $170,000 - $250,000
