Job Description
Performs housekeeping duties as designated to ensure a safe environment by AORN Standards. Works with surgical team to move large equipment and supplies into the OR to assist in set up. Assists with opening sterile supplies under the direction of the surgical team. Assists in instrument cleaning and sterilization under the direction of the surgical team. Works with the surgical team to remove dirty instruments, suction canisters and other items as required. Assists the patient care team to ensure smooth operations and focus on customer service. Serves the population from pediatric to geriatric as defined in Structure Standards.
- Transport, pickup and return equipment correctly, assists in maintenance; ensure proper cleaning and sterilization of all necessary equipment as directed.
- Performs daily biological testing for Steris. Transports specimens to the lab and obtain supplies from central sterile as needed. Performs weekly eye-wash station testing and other specific duties in the OR.
- Maintains traffic control and maintains awareness of safety hazards to prevent damage or harm to personnel or patients
- Wears appropriate clothing, hair coverings and mask in designated areas.
- Safely transports, transfers and ambulates patients using proper body mechanics
- Demonstrates interpersonal skills and competencies for the preschooler, school age, adolescent, adult, visitors and elderly patients
- Maintain sterilization records and controls for autoclaves and Steris in the operating room
- Assists in the inventory, storing and stocking of supplies, maintains par levels to ensure availability. Provides equipment before, during and after a procedure as directed
- Assists the surgical team as directed in opening sterile supplies under the direction of the surgical team
- Develops and promotes a constructive/positive atmosphere within the work area by demonstrating the ability to maintain cooperation with and assist fellow health team members. Acts as a preceptor for new team members
- Reports problems and resolutions to problems regarding patients, team members, visitors, etc. to the nurse and is able to recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
- Demonstrates compliance with patient safety and risk management protocols including standard precautions and infection control policies. Properly uses protective equipment when using chemical solutions
- Demonstrates ability to move video towers and other necessary supplies into OR to assist in set up
- Demonstrates urgency in cleaning and setting up for next procedure
- Assists in taking contaminated instruments to Central Sterile
- Adheres to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
- When qualified as a Certified Nursing Assistant, may assist in providing patient care and treatment in accordance with the Standards of Care at UCH
Qualifications
Education & Training:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- BLS certification required (American Heart Association)
- Nursing Assistant Certification in the State of Maryland preferred
Work Orientation & Experience:
- Previous experience as Nursing Assistant in hospital and/or operating room.
- Computer experience preferred.

Compensation:
- Full-Time/Days (8am-4:30pm)
- Pay Range: $17.51-$24.76
