Job Description
Phlebotomist
Full Time, 1:30p-10p

General Summary
This role performs capillary and venous blood collection with few uncollected specimens, unacceptable specimens, or requests for assistance. This position processes specimens using computers and/or manual systems following established procedures and performs clerical and receptionist duties as needed. This position will perform point of care testing under the administrative supervision of the Anticoagulation Manager with technical supervision of the Laboratory Point of Care Coordinator (LPOCC). This testing will be performed in accordance with established Laboratory quality control protocols as well as strict adherence to manufacturer procedure. Interacts with patient populations from neonate to geriatric. May provide coverage with Laboratory Services.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Collects and prepares blood samples for analysis with accuracy and efficiency to reduce repeat sticks. Obtains non-blood specimens from patients as appropriate to reduce repeat collections.
2. Determines acceptability of specimens according to Laboratory User’s Manual or reference laboratory requirements; notifies designated persons if specimens are not acceptable; prepares necessary documentation of such activities to reduce erroneous or suboptimal results.
3. Checks questionable test orders in a diplomatic manner with nursing unit or physician to ensure appropriate patient care.
4. Verifies patient’s identity and accurately labels specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures to insure reliability of laboratory results. Properly labels and processes specimens to avoid errors.
5. Accurately orders and obtains specimens using computer or manual systems to ensure reliability of laboratory results. Stores and/or transports samples, using appropriate prescribed preservation methods to maintain specimen quality.
6. Performs clerical duties including filing, copying, mailing results, sorting manual and computer requisitions to ensure accurate and timely access to patient data. Accurately faxes or calls results in a timely manner when requested to do so to ensure timely patient care.
Qualifications
Education & Training:
- Completion of a structured phlebotomy course that included a minimum of 40 hours of didactic and 80 clinical hours in a laboratory/hospital setting. One may substitute this with one year full time equivalent phlebotomy experience in a laboratory/hospital setting or a UM UCH approved training program with documentation of competency.
- Satisfactory annual competency for point of care testing will be required. Competency will be provided and maintained by the LPOCC.
- One (1) year of full-time experience in laboratory/hospital setting is required.
