We provide a better state of care by working in a world class, Magnet designated Academic Medical Center providing expert multidisciplinary care for children from infants to young adults with life-threatening conditions.  We meet the unique needs of these specialized populations by integrating safety-focused, family-centered patient care with superb service, while individualizing patient education and psycho-social support.  We endeavor to incorporate current evidence and innovative research into our practice, throughout the continuum of care.

About the Unit:

At the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital, that is a sentiment we fully believe in, so we have a very BIG space for the tiniest people of all.

The Drs. Rouben and Violet Jiji Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a 37,000 square feet of space made up of 52 single rooms, including twin suites. With sleeping couches in every room, families are able to be with their babies round-the-clock, allowing for more bonding and kangaroo holding.

Every detail was carefully considered during the design and construction of this space so that we can provide a true family-centered experience with an emphasis on great patient outcomes.

As a Level IV NICU, we provide the highest intensity of care for the smallest and most critically-ill babies. Our teams of doctors, nurses and support staff provide 24/7 care for a wide range of problems from premature birth and congenital heart defects to breathing issues and kidney problems.

We care for twice the number of babies as most community-hospitals NICUs which means we have the experience needed to help babies survive and thrive. We have a specialized transport team that helps bring babies via air or ground ambulance to the Children’s Hospital for the complex care they need.
