Reports to: Manager of Program Services
Salary Range: $43.47 - $54.34 per hour
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Shifts: Days - Monday-Friday - 8 hour shifts
Status: Temporary Full-Time (1 year contract)
Closing Date: August 25, 2026

Position Summary

As an integral member of interdisciplinary team, the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) provides assessment and treatment for adult patients with communication and swallowing disorders. The successful candidate will work in a progressive multi-professional team, participate in rounds, meetings and quality initiatives and assist with coverage across other clinical service areas as necessary. 

Duties

  • Provides assessment and treatment for adult patients
  • The successful candidate will work closely within a high functioning, multi-disciplinary team participating in rounds, HNC specific committees and quality initiatives to support the complex needs of this patient population
  • Involved in teaching group education classes
  • Assist with coverage across other clinical services
  • Aids in the identification of patients who are appropriate for speech-language pathology services.
  • Participates in healthcare team meetings as required.
  • Reviews charts, interviews patients, families and significant others (as appropriate) to gather pertinent data on communication and swallowing history, educational and linguistic background, health status, and physical and social environment of the patient.
  • Completes screening and/or assessment of swallowing and communication function and devises plan for management.
  • Conducts Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies.
  • Participates in Tracheostomy Care.
  • With appropriate training and certification, assumes duties of related delegated acts and medical directives.
  • Provides education to patients, families, other care givers and staff regarding assessment findings and management suggestions.
  • Participates in family conferences.Advocates on behalf of patients, family members and significant others, as appropriate.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures related to record keeping defined by UHN, Public Hospitals Act, and CASLPO.
  • Provides coverage to other clinicians’ caseloads as required.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

 

  • Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent
  • Registration with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO)
  • 2 years' experience in an acute care hospital, preferred
  • Experience in professional education, presentation and in-services, preferred
  • Recognizes and acts within the scope of practice of a speech-language pathologist
  • Understanding of health care teams and how the skills and competencies of all members contribute toward patient management
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Commitment to self-directed/life-long learning and evidence-based practice
  • Flexibility and ability to prioritize and to deal with changes in tasks with short notice
  • Function in a stressful environment while maintaining professional demeanor
  • Compliance with legislation outlined in Regulation of Health Professions Act (1991)
  • Compliance with departmental and hospital safety, emergency and infection control procedures
  • Computer literacy, preferred
  • Experience in development, implementation and monitoring of quality indicators, preferred
