Job Description
The VP, Academic is a senior academic leader and a member of the executive team, responsible for shaping and advancing the institution’s academic strategy. Reporting to the Principal, this role leads all academic programs, oversees new program development, enables pedagogical innovation, cultivates a community of practice in educational research, and leads the institutions clinical placement process, accreditation, and quality assurance. The VP, Academic is accountable for building strategic partnerships across the healthcare landscape to support learner success and respond to evolving workforce needs. As Michener’s foremost academic voice, the VP, Academic ensures that programs meet all standards of excellence, innovation and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for academic programs, ensuring alignment with institutional vision, mission, and priorities.
- Lead the development, delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of curriculum, programs, and instructional strategies.
- Oversee academic quality and compliance, including accreditation, performance metrics, and implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
- Oversee clinical placements and maintain strong partnerships with external stakeholders to support program delivery and student learning.
- Build and maintain effective partnerships with clinical sites, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders; represent the organization on committees and advisory groups.
- Support Program Chairs, faculty, and staff through effective recruitment, workforce planning, performance management, coaching, and professional development.
- Foster a high-performing, collaborative, and inclusive environment that supports teaching excellence and innovation.
- Champion a student-centred approach by monitoring student experience, resolving concerns, and overseeing academic processes such as admissions standards, appeals, and discipline.
- Manage academic and departmental and program budgets, including planning, forecasting, and resource allocation (financial, physical, and human).
- Support program promotion, enrolment initiatives, and development of marketing and recruitment materials.
- Lead planning and development of academic spaces, equipment, and resources to support program needs.
- Lead strategic initiatives, special projects, and new program development, including business case and proposal development.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and regulatory requirements, including safe learning environments, certifications, and risk mitigation.
- Promote continuous improvement through personal leadership development and staying current with trends in healthcare, education, and leadership practices.
Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in Health, Health Sciences, or a related healthcare discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive leadership experience in an academic and/or healthcare environment.
- Demonstrated ability to provide strategic direction for academic programs, services, and teams in alignment with institutional goals.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex environments and develop effective, strategic solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences, including students, faculty, senior leaders and external partners.
- Proven expertise in human resource management, including staff development, performance management, and workforce planning.
- Experience managing budgets and resources effectively.
- Advanced conflict management, negotiation, and resolution skills, with the ability to foster collaboration and address complex issues in a unionized environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and support organizational change and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong collaboration and teamwork skills, with experience working across diverse groups and leading participatory decision-making processes.
- Ability to mentor and develop staff, including leaders and faculty.
- High degree of flexibility, adaptability, and sound judgment in a dynamic environment.
