Position Summary
The technologists within the Imaging Service team are responsible for the safe repair, performance assurance, preventive maintenance, and incoming inspection of imaging systems. The team currently supports Molecular Imaging, Digital Radiography, Ultrasound, Breast Imaging, Computed Tomography, Fluoroscopy, and Angiography systems.
This position expands the team's capability into Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), establishing an in-house, frontline technical response for MRI systems. The successful candidate will serve as the primary on-site resource for the operational and infrastructure aspects of MRI support. This will include power quality and continuity, as well as UPS and emergency power readiness. The position will act as the technical liaison between clinical MR teams, vendors, and the inhouse facilities team. This is a developing area of responsibility for the department, and this position will play a key role in shaping the MRI support model. There will be opportunities to support other modalities as needed.
The position works directly with a wide variety of health care professionals (e.g. physicians, nurses, medical radiation technologists, and support staff) and medical equipment vendors. This position is located in the downtown core and it is preferred that candidates have reliable transportation for coming into the office on a timely manner.
Duties
- Maintains responsibility for the technical support of imaging equipment within area of responsibility, with a primary focus on MRI systems and their supporting infrastructure.
- Provides frontline, on-site response to MRI service events, including power interruptions and chiller/cooling faults, performing first-line assessment, escalation, and coordination with vendor field service and UHN Facilities to minimize downtime.
- Schedules and performs regularly scheduled maintenance alongside vendor and ensures these are completed on schedule.
- Participates in the full equipment lifecycle, including: Request for Proposal (RFP) development, product evaluation (e.g., image quality comparison), installation planning (room layouts), room construction verification (shielding, system placement), equipment installation and incoming inspection, acceptance and performance/safety testing (including HARP testing for X-ray-based modalities), hospital network integration, ongoing service support, and end-of-life planning
- Maintains work documentation, equipment inventory, and service records in the Medical Engineering database.
- Participates in research and development projects relating to imaging equipment.
- Participates in team processes including hiring, planning, and goal-setting; attends departmental, team, and medical imaging site meetings as required.
- Performs risk management activities (e.g. incident investigations, managing safety alerts/recalls, proactively identifying safety-related issues).
- Performs cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested.
- Works in compliance of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies and contravention’s of the Act, in a timely manner.
Qualifications
- Completion of a 3-year community college program in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, or a recognized equivalent is required
- A minimum of 7 years of practical and related experience is required, with significant experience supporting medical imaging equipment in a clinical environment preferred
- Direct experience supporting MRI systems is strongly preferred
- MR safety training, or willingness to complete MR safety training and credentialing upon hire, is required
- Strong knowledge of electronics, electrical systems, and power distribution is required; familiarity with HVAC/cooling systems is an asset
- Membership in the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) or an equivalent provincial technology association is an asset
- Certification as a Biomedical Engineering Technologist through the ACI is an asset
- Membership in a provincial or national clinical/biomedical engineering society (e.g., Clinical Engineering Society of Ontario (CESO), Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES)) is an asset
- Strong problem recognition and problem-solving skills in a technical field
- Strong interpersonal, customer service, and verbal/written communication skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong ability to work effectively as a team member and build working relationships across departments
- Adaptable and open-minded, with the ability to absorb new information quickly and pivot when needed
- Commitment to patient care and safety
- Strong computer skills, including reporting (e.g., Excel) and Microsoft 365 applications
