Job Summary
University Health Network (UHN) is seeking an experienced professional to fill the role of Director, Transformation, in the Sprott Department of Surgery – Canada’s largest surgical program. Every day, doctors, nurses, scientists and others from different disciplines work together to tackle some of the world’s most complex surgeries and toughest medical problems. Sprott Surgery teams have developed groundbreaking technologies that are now used in hospitals everywhere, and have developed surgical techniques that save countless lives.
The department spans 13 surgical divisions, from cardiovascular to neurosurgery to thoracic, across three University Health Network hospitals: Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre
Reporting to the Clinical Director and Surgeon-in-Chief, the Director, Transformation provides leadership, strategic direction and oversight to advance the Program’s prominence as an international leader in care, innovation, research and education. In particular, the Director is responsible for advancing the realization of the Department’s strategic plan as it relates to the development and monitoring of annual operating plans.
The role combines strategic foresight with the ability to deliver on large-scale change initiatives at an organizational level. The incumbent will employ an entrepreneurial approach to Program development, with an acumen to identify and successfully pursue opportunities of significance in alignment with the vision and mission of UHN.
The Director will leverage extensive organizational knowledge and established relationships with UHN’s Senior Leadership, Program Leadership, Medical Leadership, Foundations and external leadership teams to advance cross-program, cross-organizational imperatives, while navigating sensitive situations and overcoming barriers.
The Director thrives in an environment of rapid change, ambiguity, complexity and continuously changing priorities. They also display a breadth of knowledge and sound judgment to have the confidence of UHN Senior Leadership and the Program’s Executive Team.
Duties
- Manages the development, implementation, and evaluation of the department strategic plan and related operating plans, and engages with a diverse set of stakeholder groups – including the Clinical Director, Surgeon in Chief and other internal and external stakeholders - to collaborate on advancing program priorities and the achievement of set targets.
- Supports integration with other departments on related work, as well as other initiatives within Sprott Surgery as needed.
- Monitors operational/program performance; provides status updates and organizes/co-chairs and participates in committees as required.
- Sets and actions the required frameworks, methodologies and tools to execute on program plans.
- Manages a team of human resources including: setting performance expectations, allocating work, overseeing and ensuring the quality of outputs; team development; and performance management
Qualifications
- Masters degree in Health Administration or Business Administration or relevant equivalent required.
- A minimum of 5 years of management experience in a hospital/health care setting.
- Direct experience leading and collaborating with hospital stakeholders in an acute care environment within a Surgical portfolio preferred
- Professional certification or membership relating to the role i.e. Project Management Professional (PMP), Canadian Health Executive (CHE), etc.
- Advanced understanding of Ontario’s health care environment.

- Highly skilled at anticipating and analyzing risks and issues, exploring alternatives, and developing appropriate recommendations.
- Relationship management, team-building, group facilitation and conflict resolution skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare detailed spreadsheets, briefing notes, proposals, reports and letters, as well as create and deliver effective presentations at conferences, meetings, and workshops on behalf of the program – and effectively answer questions posed by health care practitioners and administrators
- Must have excellent MS Office skills – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Motivated, enthusiastic, organized and regularly meets deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively and demonstrate composure under pressure/stressful conditions.
- Adapts to and implements change and facilitates its acceptance by others.
- Maintains and protects patient confidentiality in accordance with UHN Confidentiality policy requirements.
- Has knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies, procedures & protocols.
