Position Summary

UHN STEM Pathways is a UHN-based outreach program that gives students the opportunity to learn about and explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) with members of the UHN community. The program offers students from K-12 opportunities to participate in interactive tours, scientist panels, hands-on workshops, classroom visits and more. The UHN STEM Pathways program is looking to hire a Youth Outreach Assistant.

Working under the direction of the UHN STEM Pathways Manager, the Youth Outreach Assistant will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams at UHN in the coordination of youth outreach activities across the organization. Specifically, the Outreach Assistant will play an integral role in the facilitation of in-person programming. This role involves in-person hours at various UHN sites and Toronto-based locations (i.e., schools, community centres).

Duties

  • Support all in-person facilitated by the outreach team
  • Lead the organization and facilitation of classroom visits in the local community, this includes communicating with educators, volunteers and students
  • Develop and deliver outreach on-site events, including hands-on workshops and UHN lab tours
  • Supervise, support and guide students in experiential learning opportunities
  • Develop new STEM and research focused workshops for K-12 students
  • Liaise with educators and local community groups to grow and maintain external youth outreach collaborations
  • Utilize a variety and innovative educational tools and technology and teaching approaches to enhance the learning experience
  • Maintain open and transparent communication

Qualifications

  • At minimum, pursuing Education studies or pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in a science-related discipline
  • Education background preferred (i.e., Teacher’s college candidates)
  • 2 years of youth outreach experience (including volunteer work with K-12) preferred
  • Up to 1 year youth mentorship or teaching experience, engagement with underrepresented youth preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and G Suite (i.e., Google Slides, Forms)
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to speak to and manage large groups of individuals (e.g., youth visitors)
  • Oral and written French-language ability is a valued asset
  • Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
