Position Summary:
The Sprott Department of Surgery is the largest surgical program in Canada. Sprott Surgery teams have developed ground-breaking technologies that are now used in hospitals everywhere and have developed surgical techniques that save countless lives.
The Manager, OR Supply Chain & Inventory is a strategic leadership role within UHN’s surgical portfolio, responsible for overseeing the OR supply chain and inventory management to drive sustainable value and operational efficiencies.
Reporting to the Director of Surgical Services, Perfusion and Anesthesia Services, this role provides leadership to a multidisciplinary team and has direct oversight of UHN’s inventory management function. The Manager is accountable for the implementation and monitoring of inventory management processes to enhance standardization, improve system-wide visibility, and optimize resource utilization.
The Manager operates in alignment with leading supply chain industry standards, optimizing supply chain and inventory processes to balance operational efficiency, financial stewardship, and patient safety.
This role provides leadership across people, processes, and technology within the supply chain, with a strong focus on patient safety. It is accountable for ensuring supply reliability and sound financial management across a complex inventory portfolio of over 15,000 Pyxis-managed items, including Cardinal ValueLink stock, non-stock direct purchases, consignment inventory, and owned direct-order implants.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy
- Provide leadership to the OR Supply Chain and Inventory Management team, including unionized Inventory Aides and non-union Implant Specialists and Supervisors.
- Establish and oversee an Inventory Management Office to coordinate onsite inventory across perioperative environments.
- Develop and implement strategies that advance standardization, operational efficiency, financial stewardship, and patient safety, aligned with leading practices.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and service excellence.
- Build strong relationships with clinical teams, finance, procurement, and vendors.
- Serve on organizational committees (e.g., Value Analysis Committee) to support product evaluation, standardization, and procurement decisions.
- Oversee vendor performance and drive metrics to improve efficiency, cost savings, and quality outcomes.
Inventory & Supply Chain Operations
- Oversee a complex OR inventory portfolio, including 15,000+ Pyxis-managed items, stock and non-stock supplies, consignment inventory, and implants.
- Implement and sustain standardized inventory control processes (e.g., cycle counts, reconciliation) to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Lead supply planning, forecasting, and utilization analysis to align with clinical demand.
- Identify opportunities for cost optimization, waste reduction, and supply standardization.
- Support contract implementation and conversions in collaboration with Procurement and clinical stakeholders.
Systems, Technology & Data
- Oversee supply chain systems, including Pyxis and its integration with SAP and EPIC, ensuring optimal performance and data integrity.
- Lead system implementations, builds, conversions, and upgrades in collaboration with vendors and clinical teams.
- Develop and monitor KPIs and reporting (clinical, operational, financial, patient safety) to support decision-making.
- Oversee inventory and financial reporting, including year-end processes.
Stakeholder Engagement & Clinical Integration
- Partner with clinical teams to ensure supply availability, evaluate products, and support best practices in patient care.
- Collaborate with Quality and Patient Safety teams on recall management and compliance (e.g., One Recall System).
- Provide education and support on supply chain systems and processes.
- Lead and support multidisciplinary supply chain initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business Administration, Finance or a related field required, Masters degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience managing teams and complex initiatives in a fast-paced, clinical environment.
- Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in supply chain, procurement, or materials management, with experience in a healthcare setting.
- Strong knowledge of public procurement practices, including Ontario BPS Procurement Directive and applicable legislation.
- Experience in strategic sourcing, OR supply chain operations, including clinically integrated technology and systems (e.g., EPIC, Pyxis), is preferred.
- Professional designation (e.g., SCMP, PMP) is an asset.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills across multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint.
