Hours: 37.5 Hours Per Week
Shifts: Monday - Friday
Status: Permanent Full-time

The Certified Prosthetist (and/or Orthotist) is responsible for providing prosthetic care to West Park Healthcare Centre and Workplace Safety Insurance Board clients to enable them to function better.

Duties:

  • Assess and treat patients with partial or total absence of a limb by evaluating, designing, fabricating, fitting and aligning artificial limbs known as “prostheses”. Assess and treat patients with neurological/muscular and/or skeletal disorders by evaluating, designing, fabricating, fitting and braces known as “orthoses”.
  • Prescribing appropriate device designs/componentry and producing detailed cost estimates. 
  • Provide education to patients, their families and team members on the safe use and care of prosthesis.
  • Provide client follow-up care for prosthetic/orthotic patients.
  • Ensure that technical fabrication of devices are as prescribed by communicating specific details to the Prosthetic/Orthotic Technician via detailed work order forms and documentation.
  • Repair devices and manage prosthetic component warranty servicing programs as necessary, often on an urgent or unscheduled appointment basis.
  • Complete timely and thorough clinical documentation including additional documentation required by insurance bodies.
  • Participate in Ambulatory Clinics through the provision of prosthetic and orthotic expertise, authorization of devices required and refer patients’ to ambulatory clinic for medical concerns.
  • Provide insurance providers with estimate future device needs based on patients’ age, activity level and type of device.
  • Pursue continuous professional development education as required to maintain designation by Orthotics Prosthetics Canada.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of an Orthotics and Prosthetics program at a recognized post-secondary school
  • Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist with Orthotics Prosthetics Canada (OPC) and member in good standing
  • Eligible for authorizer status for the Assistive Devices Program for Conventional and Externally Powered Limb Prostheses
  • Membership in the Ontario Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists (O.A.P.O) preferred
  • 3-5 years related work experience
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Basic computer skills
  • Demonstrated ability to meet production timelines
  • Evidence of commitment to continuous education
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Experience working with computerized assisted design (CADCAM)
  • Fully versed in both clinical and technical methods of fabricating and fitting devices
  • Well-developed clinical problem solving skills
  • Well-developed technical hand skills
  • Experience with microprocessor and myoelectric prostheses would be an asset
