Position summary

The Director of Professional Practice (DPP), a member of the University Health Network (UHN) Collaborative Academic Practice (CAP) portfolio, is an active partner for operational leadership, informing, setting and maintaining standards for the professional practice of the health professionals, establishing core practice requirements and enabling next/best practice in an academic health sciences setting. The DPP also works within a team, comprised of other program-specific Directors of Practice and Director of Practice-Based Education as well as providing leadership for a team of Managers of Professional Practice, Advanced Practice Nurse Educators and other Advanced Practice clinical roles. Within this group, the DPP develops and contributes to workplans for common issues and/or enterprise-wide strategies key to optimal operations of UHN and to advancing clinical practice. 

Duties

  • Lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of profession-specific and interprofessional practice standards and quality initiatives for all aligned inpatient and outpatient services at the program level, and across the organization when appropriate
  • Establish and maintain quality improvement initiatives and promote a vision of practice excellence through academic hubs, integrating practice-based education and point of care research capacity within and across UHN programs, hospitals and in the external community
  • Partner to develop and implement organization-wide health-care delivery models which advance UHN’s foundational values
  • As a member of the Acute Care Executive Leadership team, lead standardization of care and health professions practice within these programs and sites along the continuum of care as patients transition between UHN sites and programs

Qualifications

  • Member the College of Nursing of Ontario (CNO)
  • Minimum of Masters level education required, e.g., Master’s degree in nursing
  • Minimum of three (3) years in a advanced leadership role, as well as operational experience (human resource management, financial budgeting and quality reporting)
  • A minimum of ten (10) years related clinical experience required in the Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Family Health Team, General Internal Medicine, Neurosciences & Mental Health clinical expertise preferred
  • Experience in advancing professional practice through shared leadership, mentorship, education and outcome measurement in a health care environment
  • Exceptional consulting, negotiating skills, strategic and critical thinking, and change management skills
  • Broad understanding of the health care system, related issues and trends, policies and legislation
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse leadership, management, patients, employee groups and individuals while modelling respect and civility
  • Demonstrated ability to actively incorporate patients as partners in relevant work of the portfolio
  • Cross appointment with a UHN affiliated College or University preferred (or eligibility)
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Research knowledge and experience with a record of research publications preferred
  • Evidence of project management experience
  • Excellent knowledge of quality improvement principles and practices
  • Ability to multi-task effectively (i.e. to handle large numbers of diverse issues simultaneously) and time management skills
  • Ability to lead in situations of ambiguity
  • Experience in decision support analysis and resource utilization management processes
  • Knowledge of computer systems and various software applications, particularly experience with EPIC is an asset
  • Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act, standards of professional practice and codes of ethics, health care consent and ethical implications of care delivery
  • Appointment or eligibility for appointment with the University of Toronto and other academic affiliates
  • Strong track record of establishing external relationships, which facilitate and enhance the visibility of professional practice at a regional and national level
