Status: Temporary Full-time

Position Summary:
The Myeloma Research group is seeking a research technician with experience preparing pathology tissue blocks, blood, and other biospecimens for next generation sequencing. Affiliated with the University of Toronto and located at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre within the University Health Network in Toronto, Canada, the Research group is well-positioned to translate research findings into impact on clinical care. This position represents an opportunity for a creative individual with a strong molecular biology skill set to gain exposure to many clinically-oriented genomics projects with impact on the understanding of treatment across cancers. The ideal applicant will be self-motivated, tech-savvy, knowledgeable about genomics and next generation sequencing, and interested in learning complex library preparation and capture techniques. Strong detail-oriented lab skills and a commitment to meticulous documentation are a must.

Duties:

  • Performing various molecular biology assays including nucleic acid extraction, PCR and sample prep for NGS
  • Proper handling of biohazardous materials (BSL 2)
  • Quality control testing of next generation sequencing libraries (e.g. Agilent TapeStation, Qubit, Bioanalyzer)
  • Data input and tracking with LIMS systems
  • The candidate will support multiple projects, work directly with other members of the lab

Qualifications

  • At minimum, completion of a B.Sc. in Life or Health Sciences, or related field;
  • At minimum, 6 months of practical and related experience working in a related genomics research field
  • Experience extracting nucleic acids from blood and tissue (experience with QIAGEN kits an asset)
  • Experience preparing libraries for next generation sequencing (experience with IDT xGen Lockdown protocols an asset)
  • Experience using LIMS systems preferred
  • Excellent organizational and time management skill
  • A high degree of motivation, reliability, and independence
  • Follows established guidelines, procedures, and standards
  • Good problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Collaborative mindset, able to follow instructions, and willing to work independently but also closely with other members of the team
  • Excellent competency in written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office software for record keeping is essential
  • Strong analytical skills, excellent judgment, and the ability to work independently with guidance are essential.
