Job Description

Work Model: On-Site 
Hours: 37.5 hours/week 
Salary: $71,000 to $82,000 (To commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN compensation policy)
Shifts: Day Shifts
Status: Permanent Full-Time

Position Summary:

We are a translational lab focused on gastrointestinal tumour progression and treatment resistance. Our overall goal is to apply new mechanistic insights to better understand cancer progression and develop new therapeutic strategies. 

About 20% of this role will also involve supporting an ongoing clinical trial within Dr. Kazazian’s lab. For this reason, we are looking for a candidate who is eager to expand their skillset to include clinical trials management, or a candidate with relevant experience.  

 

Duties:

  • Applies moderately advanced technical knowledge and skills to perform complex laboratory procedures and experiments
  • Perform tissue processing and handling of surgical tissues to support PI's studies
  • Biosafety level 2/3 lab work including cell culture and mouse handing
  • Standard assays including RT-PCR, flow cytometry, Western blot 
  • Preparing samples for next generation sequencing assays 
  • Interprets test results and experiments
  • Determines next phase of testing/experimentation, identifying appropriate protocol and techniques
  • Communicates findings to other lab members and maintains records of experimental data
  • Performs animal studies (appropriate education is required)
  • Liaises with sponsor for monitoring/audits 
  • Exercises significant independent judgement, initiative and decision making, in consultation with investigator, to resolve technical problems (e.g., interpretation of test results, modification of techniques and procedures, etc.)
  • Interacts frequently with internal contacts and occasionally with external contacts
  • Prepares discussions and status reports on normal business processes in written, verbal or graphical form, as required
  • Coordination with UHN biobank, other laboratories, and supporting research students. 
  • Laboratory management
  • Compiles data from related and/or unrelated sources
  • Performs highly complex analyses
  • Provides input into decision-making for major purchases
  • May modify existing techniques and procedures, as required
  • Plans, implements, reviews and coordinates all aspects of data collection and source documentation, as per UHN policy and ICH/GCP guidelines 
  • Assist the inter-professional team in performing study specific tasks, including coordinating with OR staff and surgeons for test material labelling and handoff, case report form completion, etc. 
  • Collaborates with PI/MD and multidisciplinary health care team in recruitment of study participants (e.g., identifies and screens potential subjects; obtains informed consent; administers questionnaires or other data collection tools) 
  • Liaises with sponsor for monitoring/audits 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree 
  • 6 years related experience 
  • Broad expertise in cell and molecular biology methods and the ability to master new techniques and approaches
  • Experience with genetically engineered organoids and cell culture, and tissue processing
  • Record of productive and rigorous research, including at least one primary publication in a peer-reviewed journal
  • Ability to independently plan, conduct, and analyze research
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent organization, prioritization skills, excellent computer skills, ability to learn quickly and work independently
  • Ability to work under pressure with attention to detail
  • Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks 
  • Willingness to learn about clinical trials management  
  • Experience with clinical trials and/or clinical research is an asset
