Job Description

Department: Laboratory Services 
Status: Permanent Full-Time
Site: The Michener Institute
Salary: $61,951.13 - $77,438.91 per annum
Hours: 35 Hours per week

The primary responsibilities of the Safety Officer include: performing safety duties and coordinating projects under the direction of the Academic Chair, Medical Laboratory Sciences maintaining and coordinating safety programs; assisting with the development of safety literature/departmental process, support for incident response/investigation; providing safety training, area inspections/audit; coordinating multiple/simultaneous small scale projects for assigned groups; performing quality management responsibilities; performing data management/communication and administrative responsibilities; performing cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification as assigned and/or as requested. Biological (limited) and chemical safety for the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and maintaining safety literature within the institute.
  • Provide guidance and support to personnel regarding safety programs and procedures.
  • Respond to incidents of regulatory non-compliance and assist in follow-up investigations.
  • Collect and maintain accurate records of all safety data and information.
  • Ensure all programs and policies comply with relevant legislation.
  • Coordinates provision of certificates/permits and maintains accurate records and tracking information.
  • Perform laboratory inspections and/or audits as per regulatory requirements (Public Health Agency of Canada, Occupational Health & Safety Act, etc.)
  • Deliver safety training to personnel.
  • Conduct on-going evaluation of quality indicators to ensure the integrity and safety of projects/equipment and notify appropriate bodies of deficiencies/gaps. Attend and actively participate in intra and inter departmental meetings as required.
  • Provide support in organizing and facilitating the acquisition and transportation of biological materials from clinical sites.
  • Oversee chemical and biological safety in the organization.
  • Perform cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned and/or required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum over 3-5 years practical and related experience and/or 2 years on-the-job training required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, Environmental Sciences or equivalent required.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or professional certification in occupational health and safety preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability in researching, developing, and implementing policies or programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable legislation including the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Strong communication, decision making skills and possesses good judgement.
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation, and public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated highly effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with experience in handling contentious matters with sensitivity, confidentiality, and balance.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Access, Word, PowerPoint, Excel required.
