Job Description

Under supervision of the President’s Chief of Staff, the Music Program Manager will lead the development and implementation of a music education program across all Uncommon’s New York City elementary and middle schools. The position encompasses two distinct areas of responsibility: development of an instructional vision and the implementation of school music programs in partnership with school leaders and music teachers. The role will work closely with our curriculum and assessment team using best practices from our K-8 curriculum and professional development. As the work evolves, new responsibilities will be added. Essential Duties / Responsibilities

  • Build a vision for seamless K-8 NYC music program that integrates with high school music options
  • Source, vet, and hire music teachers alongside school leaders
  • Establish a shared music curriculum and assessments and develop supplemental materials as needed
  • Develop music teacher through observation and feedback as well as determining and executing a professional development scope and sequence
  • Lead selection process to determine which schools will open programs each year
  • Ensure each school is able to meet operational needs such as facility requirements and instrument needs
  • Provide ongoing progress monitoring of program towards established goals
  • Serve as key point of contact with program funders.

  • Experience coaching or delivering feedback
  • Must possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Strong relationship builder who will form bonds with students, teachers, school leaders, and funders

Education and/or Experience:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Music education experience (experience leading a music program preferred)
  • Experience in a school environment to understand the academic culture
  • Familiarity with music education programs. Understanding of building a sequence that allows students to develop mastery over time.
