Job Description

The English as a New Language (ENL) Teacher (sometimes referred to as English as a Second Language Teacher) is passionate about helping our English Language Learners (ELL) become proficient in the English language and be able to access their grade-level curriculum.  The ENLT teacher holds primary responsibility for implementing ENL instruction in addition to other general education or special education instruction.

Specific responsibilities

English Language Learning Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate (using diagnostic and state mandated assessments of English Language Learners), determine goals for, and track progress of individual English language learners
  • Provide direct ENL instruction to small groups of students and/or provide inclusion support for ELA classes containing ELL students, based on case load.
  • Work specifically with ELL students during assigned periods of the day to help access general education curriculum, build ELA skills, and support the use of additional technology-enhanced learning tools to promote ELL students’ language acquisition.
  • Attend and participate in IEP meetings for English Learners and complete case management and compliance responsibilities as directed
  • Advise teachers on modifying/accommodating curriculum for ELL students and share best practices to ensure high quality sheltered content instruction is provided.
  • Keep updated and accurate records of ELL identification and performance data

Instructional and Teaching Responsibilities

  • Implement curricula and activities to meet our high academic standards
  • Analyze assessments that measure progress towards these standards and use this assessment data to inform and differentiate instructional practices
  • Focus constantly on student learning, thinking critically and strategically to respond to student learning needs
  • Create a positive, structured learning environment to ensure that students observe the school’s core values, high expectations, and code of conduct
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues
  • Commit to continual professional growth, participating actively in our annual, three-week staff orientation training in August and instructional training throughout the school year
  • Participate and support grade-level activities and school-wide functions throughout the school-year

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred.
  • NY State ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) or Bilingual Certification preferred but not required

  • Mastery of and enthusiasm for relevant academic subjects and English as a New Language
  • Evidence of self-motivation, willingness to be a team player, and a strong sense of personal responsibility
  • Ability and desire to implement feedback from school leaders and colleagues to become a more effective educator in service to our students. 
  • Proven track-record of high achievement in the classroom
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred
  • Candidates must have also earned a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 or higher by the time employment begins
