Job Description

Summary of Position

The Yard Supervisor is responsible to oversee and manage all aspects of the yard and warehouse ensuring each area is extremely efficient, organized, safe and produces quality work for customer product (and rentals) to meet Doka’s needs.  The Yard Supervisor works (in conjunction with any Assistant Managers, if applicable) to support the effective hiring, discipline and performance management in order to accomplish and meet work demands for the region.  This position may also support the requirements of the Facility overall to ensure a safe working environment of all Doka employees.   He/she reports directly to the Operations Manager (and indirectly to the Branch Manager and the Head of Operations-Canada as required) while ensuring the work performed is in accordance with the global Doka quality rules and procedures. 

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a well-organized and logical yard operation;

  • Plans for and ensures the daily/weekly labour needs based upon business demands and closely monitors overtime hours and dollars;

  • Assigns tasks insuring efficient allocation of labor maximizing productivity;

  • Oversees facility equipment: ensures equipment is safe, operational and regularly serviced;

  • Motivates trains and develops a productive cohesive team;

  • Trains employees continually in the ergonomic and safe use and maintenance of tools and equipment. Ensures employees are provided with and consistently use approved safety equipment, empowering them to take ownership in the use, maintenance and safety of all tools and equipment;

  • Ensures that the proper tools are available at each workspace. Orders tools/replacement parts in a timely manner and in accordance with the Doka checklist;

  • Maintains the upkeep and maintenance of capital investments (i.e. building property, equipment, etc.);

  • Conducts bi-weekly safety meetings and consistently executes all safety policies.  Directs all employees ensuring safe working practices are strictly adhered to while maintaining a safe working environment; 

  • Conducts monthly safety/yard inspections, documents findings/observations and distributes to the Operations Manager;

  • Oversees inventory quality and insures accurate quality control. Conducts monthly quality control inspections, documents findings/observations and sends reports to the Operations Manager;

  • Ensures that underlay timbers are available in appropriate sizes;

  • Ensures yard staff are continually trained in product knowledge and organizing the yard operation to function in an organized, productive way;  

  • Manages the logistics of all material (location, flow of goods) to ensure proper storage avoiding congestion;

  • Ensures proper disposal of all damaged/scrap material in accordance with company policies and procedures;

  • Ensure all containers and shelves are accurately marked to provide proper product identification (especially where this pertains to safety);

  • Manages yard and warehouse ensuring the compliance with company cleanliness and housekeeping standards;

  • Accurately processes the timely flow of paper orders.

Other Responsibilities/Peripheral Functions

  • Occasional travel is required – (locally <25%, provincially <10%);

  • Other duties/projects as assigned; including participating in company committees/ teams;

  • Flexible to work overtime as required;

  • Complies with all corporate policies and business practices;

  • Complies with OH&S safety standards as well as Employment Standards

  • Continually enhances technical skills with additional PC Training and DISCOS II training.

Qualifications

Qualifications/Technical Proficiency:

  • High School Graduate a must; Post-Secondary Degree in Business or related field preferred;

  • 1-3 years related experience (customer service, yard supervision, business administration, or logistics preferred);

  • Attentive to detail with strong problem resolution skills;

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organization and follow-up skills along with a strong numerical aptitude required;

  • Demonstrated inter-personal skills to daily work with employees re training, performance management, and other work related issues;

  • Effectively manages multiple tasks and handles all responsibilities with a strong sense of urgency;

  • Able to manage time effectively, take initiative, manage and adjust priorities;

  • Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation;

  • Above average communication skills including an excellent command of English (speaking, reading, writing);

  • Qualitative abilities including strong analytical skills, technical proficiency and effective problem solving skills;

  • Proficient using Microsoft Office applications;

  • Willing and able to learn new products, concepts/techniques and computer software programs;

  • “Can do” attitude and team player able to work independently in a results-driven, fast-paced environment.

 Problem Solving

This position requires the ability to support the branch office and serve as a liaison to the customers and sales personnel resolving issues at times on short notice with minimal information.
