Company Description

Ultiworld is the leading news media organization in disc sports (ultimate frisbee and disc golf). From deep reporting to incisive analysis to live video production, Ultiworld is at the forefront of content creation in the fast-growing disc sports world.

Job Description

Ultiworld seeks to hire an Associate Editor to join our editorial team. We have created this new position, envisioned as an important voice and leader for our team, to ensure more diverse perspectives are embedded in all aspects of our work.

The Associate Editor will work complete work in the following areas:

  • Copyediting and publishing: The Associate Editor will learn to edit, prep, and publish content on the site, primarily focusing on written articles but potentially providing edits and feedback on video, podcast, and social media content as well.

  • Editorial and Reporting team participation: The Associate Editor will contribute to weekly editorial meetings to brainstorm ideas, strategize direction, and assign work among the reporting team.

  • Reinforce equitable coverage: As part of Ultiworld’s efforts to ensure equitable coverage, this new position will work with the existing editors to provide additional monitoring, advocacy, and coordination for equitable coverage. The editorial team at Ultiworld does not intend for this Associate Editor to serve as the sole individual focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion -- the company is committed to integrating these values across all of our content as well as the process by which the work is conducted.

The Associate Editor should expect their core responsibilities to require between 5-10 hours of work per week, depending on the time of year. Dedicated hours are expected to expand at peak times for Ultiworld coverage, notably April-June (the end of college and beginning of club seasons) and September-October (the end of the club division season).

In addition to assigned editing duties, this part-time position will be given the opportunity and encouraged, though not required, to grow their influence and external visibility by contributing across various platforms within the company. The Associate Editor could have the opportunity to contribute on coverage teams for major regional and national events -- pending availability and Ultiworld’s event reporting needs -- as well as potentially sharing their voice on video and podcast projects.

 Specific duties to include:

  • Engage during weekly editorial meetings to share ideas and discuss content calendar

  • Manage their own project pipeline and deadlines, including coordinating and communicating with editorial team regarding progress, updates on timing, and other information as needed

  • Pitch ideas for new features/content (whether single articles, a new column, a video or podcast concept, social media campaign, etc.) by independently pursuing news and information in the ultimate world for story ideas and important topics

  • Contribute ideas for improved editorial processes

  • Write copy for breaking news or as connective tissue on collaborative articles (ex: intros or transitions)
