Job Description

Ulbrich Stainless Steels & Special Metals, Inc. is seeking a Manufacturing and Process Engineer at our Ulbrich Shaped Wire division in North Haven, CT. The Manufacturing and Process Engineer will partner with maintenance and production on developing and implementing continuous improvement projects. This position provides technical support on machine downtime, preventative actions, and quality issues by conducting root cause analysis and recommending corrective actions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Observes current conditions and identifies challenges at work centers by collaborating with maintenance and manufacturing to develop continuous improvement projects which require engineering involvement from concept to implementation.
  • Works with team members to develop detailed work instructions to support processes.
  • Participates and leads USW Lean activities (Kaizen/A3/TPM Events).
  • Provides technical expertise in all facets of the USW manufacturing process, including productivity, safety, quality and 5S housekeeping.
  • Identifies the need for new manufacturing equipment by conducting: ROI calculations; net payback analysis; the review of contract/terms for machine qualification; and qualifying potential equipment builders as well as third party vendors (i.e. electrical/HVAC/plumbing/data network services, structural professional engineers, industrial rigging/crane/floor trenching contractor services).
  • Interfaces with customers, vendors, in-house sales, and manufacturing staff on quality issues by conducting root cause analysis and developing corrective action.
  • Maintains and provides CAD layouts of the existing and newly located equipment in all manufacturing facilities and supporting areas.
  • Coordinate with production personnel to determine potential machine downtime and scheduling challenges while executing machine repairs, upgrades, or installations adhering to clear and concise planning.
  • Provide technical expertise on processes related to the metal processing industry including industrial cleaning technology; wire straightening; and inline/offline gaging for Shaped Wire metrology/measurement.
  • Provide support to areas outside of the Engineering area including procurement, quality assurance, maintenance, and production.
  • SAS for IoT (Statistical analysis Systems) implementation for process and quality improvement as well as machine predictive maintenance.
  • Systematically troubleshoot machine failures to determine and implement best possible solutions with maintenance personnel.
     

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering is preferred plus a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills are required.
  • Familiar with lean manufacturing concepts and Quality tools and systems.
  • Proficient with computers, CAD, or other technology needed to accomplish engineering goals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to acquire new skills improving efficiency and project quality.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods.
  • The ability to work independently as well as work in a team environment.
  • Must be comfortable with dynamic work conditions and efficient decision making.
