Job Description

The Field Applications Engineer is responsible for developing, servicing, training and supporting both the customer test equipment and customer personnel. The primary focus is customer service experience working with dynamometer control software to integrate customer test requests, performing test equipment calibrations, and executing troubleshooting efforts on test cell equipment. This role requires the ability to successfully manage tasks and assignments in multiple areas. Initiative and ownership of responsibilities are critical to the success of this individual.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Commission Dynamometer Test Systems utilizing the following components:
    • Windows OS HMIs, Real time Computers using an RTOS
    • FPGA / Instrumentation / PLCs / Third party software
    • Induction, permanent magnet and DC dynamometers, AC drives and DC drives
    • Ancillary Equipment (coolant and oil conditioning, etc.)
  • Configure equipment using the following communication protocols
    • EtherCAT, Modbus Variants, Profibus, AK Engine, UDP
    • Serial (RS-232, RS-485)
    • FlexRay, CAN (and variants)
  • Controller setup, calibration, commissioning, service, and warranty tasks for test systems
  • Develop LabVIEW programs for Dynamometer controller and Automated Test Equipment to meet customer needs
  • Analyze Data generated from Dynamometers and create custom reports for Customers using LabVIEW and Diadem
  • Assist customer technical issues and problem resolution to debug Software and Hardware problems
  • Create, review and document Software requirement specifications, Test Plans, Software Change Requests, and Software User Manuals
  • Participate in Software Design reviews, code reviews, and project update meetings
  • Interact with internal and external customers for troubleshooting and debugging software
  • Continued learning of new methods and equipment to improve job capabilities and testing
  • Train customers on using REPS Dynamometer Testing software
  • Create reports based on work completed for customer approval
  • Tracking time spent on jobs and other tasks.
  • Generate parts lists and order sheets for troubleshooting efforts and support work
  • Assists in supporting the UTAC culture and values (Integrity, Expertise, and Innovation)
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

 

Qualifications

Education and Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with LabVIEW and PLC programming
  • Ability to understand different programming languages
  • A reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license to travel to customer sites
  • 3 years of relevant work experience required
  • Familiarity with automotive testing procedures and test definitions
  • Experience with hands-on projects
  • Knowledge of automotive propulsion and driveline systems
  • Ability to interpret electrical, mechanical schematics
  • Knowledge of control components (sensors, motor control devices, etc.)
  • Able to relay technical information in a way your audience understands
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Focus on safety and quality
  • Flexibility to support service activity both off-site and outside of normal working hours.
  • A passport and willingness to travel in and out of the US
  • Ability to spend 80% of your time off-site; Majority of the off-site work is local and allows you to be home each day, however, an estimated 20% of the 80% off-site work can be in another state or another country- With an estimated 4-8 weeks being spent away from home (amount of travel is subject to change as we grow globally)
  • Valid passport
  • Vector and NI training certification a plus
  • Proficient with all Microsoft Office applications and the ability to become proficient in any systems that we use (Concur, Kronos, etc.)

Physical Requirements:

  • Exposure to industry accepted chemicals and noise
  • Regularly required to stand, reach, bend and move about the facility
  • Able to lift and/or move materials as needed in the performance of assigned duties
  • Requirements include, but are not limited to stand, walk, sit, twist, bend, lift, see, speak, hear
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
