The salary for this role is £67,023 (inclusive of a Market Premium Payment (MPP).
Onsite working is expected for 3 days each week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.
Job Description
This role can be based at any of the following sites; Rotherham, West Yorkshire / Culham, Oxfordshire.
This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.
The Role

As Magnet Technology Group Leader, you will play a pivotal role in developing a coherent and deployable strategic plan for Magnets Technology, identifying opportunities for innovation, securing funding, and creating a roadmap for the R&D programme. You will also play a key role in growing the group's contribution and influence by collaborating and engaging with internal stakeholders, academia, and national and international industry, as well as identifying and securing new grant funding
Additional Responsibilities:
- Lead a group of Magnet Development Engineers and act as an expert in magnet technology providing technical and programmatic leadership for high-value projects,.
- Propose exploitation plans for existing and future UKAEA magnet test facilities, engaging with external industry.
- Building strategic partnerships with relevant industry, academia, and research institutes to further the aims of the R&D programme and utilization of test facilities.
- Leverage the economic case for HTS magnet technology, establishing a superconducting magnets skills pipeline through recruitment and development to ensure qualified staff are in place to deliver work according to UKAEA standards, management systems, and relevant regulations.
Qualifications
Essential
- Superconducting magnet technical knowledge
- PhD or equivalent level of experience
- Extensive experience of leading in an R&D environment
- Chartered engineer of a professional body (or commensurate evidencable experience)
- Experience supervising technical individuals
- Experience in building and leading technical teams
- Capable of leading the development and delivery of a strategic plan
- Excellent communication skills and ability to build effective relationships internally, externally and in a multinational community
Desired
- Chartered status with a professional body
- Experience line managing and coaching technical individuals
- Recognised expertise in superconducting magnets
- Commercial awareness and evidence of delivering innovative solutions
