Job Description
Twitter Legal is adding a lawyer to our Safety, Content, & Law Enforcement (SCALE) team. Our legal team is on the front lines of safety, speech, and surveillance issues that affect the internet. Twitter’s real-time environment and international growth present unique challenges in these areas and we are looking for a strategic, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic lawyer to join our team in the United States.
We provide legal advice to teams involved in safety, content moderation, and law enforcement issues around the company. We provide input and guidance around efforts to combat online abuse, to enforce Twitter’s Rules and Terms of Service (TOS), and to help Twitter comply with new regulations around the world. We advise the company on policies and procedures for responding to requests for user data and to remove content, related transparency efforts such as our bi-annual Twitter Transparency Report and user notice, and legal strategies for responding to specific requests.
You will be primarily responsible for advising Twitter’s Trust and Safety teams (T&S), as well as Twitter’s operational and technical teams on online safety and integrity issues. You will provide advice to Trust & Safety teams in developing and implementing global policies relating to safety, integrity and laws and regulations around the world. This work will include human exploitation (e.g., sex trafficking, human smuggling, domestic servitude, illegal adoption), terrorism & violent extremism, scams and fraud. You will collaborate with team members in other regions regarding alignment of Twitter policies, operationalizing legal requirements, and response to Twitter’s ever changing global regulatory environment. You will advise on the development of policies designed to ensure compliance with legal obligations consistent with Twitter’s customer commitments and with government regulations and work closely with colleagues to update existing policies in alignment with our maturity as a company. You will provide feedback to Public Policy and Public Policy Legal on legislative proposals from governments that impact Twitter’s content moderation policies. You will provide advice to legal colleagues to help them understand safety, and expression implications of product and design and tooling initiatives.
You will work cross-functionally with your legal colleagues, Trust & Safety, communications, global public policy, and other teams across the company to share guidance and find creative solutions. Every day will be different than the one before!

Qualifications
You have a J.D. and are qualified to practice law in at least one jurisdiction in the United States.
You have at least 5+ years of legal experience in issues related to governance, access to justice, technology, civic engagement, rule of law, and intersecting issues.
You have professional experience with civil society, governments, or multilateral institutions.
You have professional experience analyzing, responding, and facilitating a coordinated response to comply to new government regulations
You have in-depth knowledge of international law, particularly human rights law and human rights issues

Working on law enforcement issues
