Why Regulatory Compliance?

Our Regulatory Compliance is part of Twitter’s Trust & Safety organization. The Regulatory Compliance group focuses on building key backend and user-facing product experiences that support our efforts to comply with global content moderation standards. This team will be working to build scalable, sustainable and well thought through solutions to often complex problems. This work will be done in close partnership with our policy, legal, and operations teams, as well as our Health team which focuses on protecting and promoting the health of the public conversation. 

Job description

You will lead engineering teams who are focused on Regulatory Compliance. Working with the Legal, Governance and Policy teams, you will ensure that Twitter meets its global legal obligations while working to make Twitter a safer and more secure experience for its end users. We want Twitter to be the best place for people to have authentic conversations. In this role, you will have global reach to ensure that Twitter considers both legal and cultural norms across the globe.

The Regulatory Compliance organization is being reimagined to include multiple full-stack engineering teams that will create infrastructure and features for Twitter on Android, iOS and Web. These teams impact hundreds of millions of people, which brings with it interesting product and technical challenges at that scale. We’ll be relying on you to keep development lightweight and agile, make data-driven decisions, and release with high quality and velocity. Come be a part of our team!

What You'll Do

  • Mentor the professional development of each direct report through personal and performance management.

  • Build and foster a team culture that is positive, encouraging, inclusive, and engaging.

  • Be an ambitious source of engineering talent and be comfortable closing candidates

  • Give engineers the tools, confidence, and motivation to make decisions independently which enables them to develop and perform as highly as possible

Our ultimate goal is to ‘ship it ’, so it’s imperative that the engineering manager:

  • Owns the group’s technical strategy and roadmap and creates success metrics in close collaboration with other Engineering and Product Managers.

  • Brings a strong perspective that inspires new ideas and motivates engineers to develop simple solutions to sophisticated problems.

  • Works with tech leads and senior engineers to capture requirements, gut checks new feature proposals and large improvements.

  • Has the technical capacity to partner with tech leads and is comfortable diving into the fray to help drive resolution in the case of bad incidents.

  • You foster strong cross-functional collaboration with Backend, Product, Design, Research, and Data Science to develop high-quality, focused products (and inspire your team to independently initiate this same collaboration).

  • You seek diverse perspectives to drive innovation and create buy-in from all technical stakeholders inside and outside the team.

  • You are experienced with software engineering best practices and bring a disciplined approach to testing and driving reductions in technical debt.

  • You ensure the team fully understands the goals and objectives of Twitter as a company and how their work fits into the bigger picture.

  • You’ve led a complex, multi-team, high dependency product initiative / engineering organization. 

  • You have experience growing, hiring and coaching engineering managers and Tech Leads. You have experience leading engineers at all levels and guiding your directs through their career development.

  • You are customer focused, with the ability to offer input on high-level solutions to customer problems that help drive product roadmap.

Qualifications

  • B.S. or Masters in Computer Science or equivalent, with 8+ years of industry experience

  • 5+ years of experience managing software engineering teams

  • Previously led an organization of 15+ engineers (and managers) and successfully delivered on business objectives. 

  • You are familiar with standard software engineering methodology, e.g. unit testing, code reviews, design documentation.

  • You have experience in software development and executing using agile / scrum methodologies and visual collaboration tools (to support remote teams)

Preferred

  • Experience with Lean engineering practices such as Devops / DORA, Story Mapping, Event Storming, etc.

  • Experience working with teams across geographies and functions
