Job Description

Machine learning is extensively used across Twitter to build user experiences ranging from onboarding users to serving their timeline to everything in between. Cortex is the central ML org at Twitter which is focused on advancing ML inside & outside Twitter. 

In the Content Understanding Research team in Cortex, we conduct original research in Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision and related fields and bring into Twitter state-of-the-art research from the external community. We partner with our ML product teams to advance the state of machine learning through close collaboration, in addition to supporting them in the design stages by guiding explorations and prototyping based on our specialized expertise. We enable them to invest in machine learning projects that would otherwise be seen as high risk due to the timescales or speculation involved.

We are experiencing a period of rapid advancement in the field of machine learning both in academia and in industry, and the fields of NLP and CV in particular have seen spectacular advances in recent years. Our role is to ensure that machine learning in Twitter benefits from, and contributes to, these advancements. We share the latest knowledge and best practices with product teams from across the company. We actively publish our work, participate in ML events and conferences and partner with other research institutions and academic labs.

What You’ll Do:

You will lead diverse, smart, and driven ML researchers and research engineers and align their career ambitions with business requirements and opportunities. We're looking for a leader who can collaborate with our internal and external partners. 

  • Mentor the professional development of direct reports and senior ICs, through personal and performance management. Build diverse and distributed teams and collaborative environments.

  • Build strong relationships with the product teams, research institutions and academic labs and deeply understand & partner with them. 

  • Lead the vision and mission for the team and for all of Twitter in the content understanding domains to advance the state of ML at Twitter and unlock business impact. 

  • Attract and retain the best research talent to make the group successful in its established mission.

Who You are:

You have experience with leading applied research teams with a responsibility for making business impact and driving innovation. 

  • You have a strong research background, and have deep expertise in NLP or Computer Vision.

  • You have a passion for taking a customer-driven approach to doing high-quality research. You take pride in driving business impact.

  • You are skilled at coaching and guiding your directs through their career development. 

  • You’re capable of communicating & collaborating with our business, product, engineering, design and research colleagues to discover new opportunities that benefit Twitter.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science with a focus on machine learning. Strong background & experience in applied research.

  • Ability to work collaboratively across a large engineering organization, both in terms of scale & in terms of mission complexity. 

  • Previous ML management experience
