The Global Participation engineering team is focused on Twitter’s topmost priority of growing its active users globally; especially in emerging/developing economies such as India and Africa. Our goal is to find new users as well as make existing users engage more actively on Twitter, on a daily basis in these regions. We are building a foundational team in Bangalore where we expect to have a cross-functional group of product managers, engineers, researchers, designers, operations, and data scientists, work as a single unit, obsessing about user needs in these regions. Who We Are

The TechDocs team is a group of technical writers and engineers committed to ensuring that engineers at Twitter always have the information they need to succeed.

As a technical writer in Engineering Effectiveness, you will accelerate developer productivity by helping engineers from many different organization's author, discover, and consume organizational know-how as technical user documentation. This role will be part of the TechDocs team, with a focus on short-term writing engagements and technical writing standard methodologies.

What You’ll Do

You will create technical documentation for many teams at Twitter as well as foster a culture of technical writing by helping our engineers explain and understand how to use our technologies more effectively.

  • Use your high-level understanding of multiple technical stacks to plan, launch, and manage documentation projects across multiple organizations.
  • Work with engineering organizations to identify customers, stakeholders, personas, and use cases.
  • Actively mentor other team members to help them be successful in the execution of their initiatives.
  • Design information architecture plans for organizations made up of multiple teams for discoverable and maintainable engineering documentation.
  • Create architecture guides, procedural content, and reference documentation for engineers.
  • Promote internal standard methodologies to drive adoption and influence the culture of technical writing on engineering teams.
  • Edit, review, organize, and expand technical information from engineers for both internal (90%) and external publishing (10%)
  • Develop technical writing and/or other resources to help engineers become more effective writers and communicators.
  • Develop tooling by writing production quality code which exemplifies best-practices for others to follow.
  • Deliver internal courses on technical writing concepts and tools to help champion a culture of documentation for both new hires and current engineers.
  • Create channels for technical writing feedback and workflows to improve the effectiveness of internal technical user documentation, especially on how to minimize onboarding costs.
  • Create, test, modify, and improve sample code.

Qualifications

Who You Are

The successful candidate should be passionate about understanding and explaining new technologies and frameworks to others, communicate well, learn quickly, and be able to write and work with sample code in a variety of programming languages. This role will be presented with a variety of key initiatives to contribute to, so a growth mindset is required.

  • BS/BA or equivalent work experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • 8 years of experience writing documentation for software developers
  • Proven understanding of software engineering, system architecture, and other foundational technology concepts
  • Familiarity with complex foundational technology concepts
  • Ability to read and understand multiple code paradigms at a high level
  • Ability to drive engineers and engineering managers to the successful completion of a project
  • Familiarity with one or more markup languages (e.g., Markdown, reStructuredText, Asciidoc, HTML)

The following would be nice to have:

  • Experience writing and maintaining documentation for an internal audience
  • Project management experience
  • Extensive experience with programming languages, tools, and software development workflows (e.g., Python, Java, Git, Bash, C++, Scala)
  • Experience writing sample code
  • Experience using Jupyter Notebooks as executable documentation
  • Experience documenting APIs, frameworks, libraries, tools, systems, and workflows in domains such as web, mobile, distributed systems, data science, machine learning, and DevOps
  • Experience using Docs as Code tooling
  • Experience developing tools for authoring, publishing, discovering, or consuming docs
