Job Description

When an event occurs in the real world, it often breaks out on Twitter. Trends provide a pulse of the public conversation to the world. Movements such as #BLM, #MeToo, and Arab spring are happening on Twitter. The Explore team builds, scales, and maintains the services that power the discovery of interesting and eventful conversations across the product. We detect and surface what’s happening and contextualize and help users understand what's happening by finding the most interesting content around Events, Trends, Moments, and Live Videos.

What's happening is one of the core usages of Twitter, and millions of people across 100+ countries and multiple languages are informed about their world through our work.

The team is focusing on these major areas:

  • Improving the real-time detection of Trends and the stories around them on a large scale.

  • Ongoing fight of Spam, Bots, Misinformation, and attempts to manipulate the public conversation.

  • Machine learning to find the content most relevant to helping people understand what's happening.

  • Expanding our technology to work across languages, countries, and different topics and communities.

The work includes real-time data processing at scale and different machine learning tasks around content understanding, spam and abuse detection, clustering of related stories, classification of content by topics, and recommendation systems to personalize results.


You have a passion for machine learning and improving the ways people consume the world, live. You’re a relevance engineer, applied data scientist or machine-learning engineer who wants to solve customer problems using Machine Learning. You’re experienced solving large scale relevance problems and comfortable building brand new systems to enable future quality improvements.

  • Knowledgeable in one or more of the following: machine-learning, information retrieval, recommendation systems, social network analysis.

  • Designed and evaluated approaches for handling high-volume real-time data streams.

  • A strong technical advocate with a background in Java, C++, or Scala, and Python.

  • Comfortable conducting design and code reviews.

  • Experienced in collaborating across multiple teams including analytics, product management, and operations.


  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science with 5+ years of related or equivalent experience.

  • Knowledge of Machine Learning techniques and Recommendation systems.
