Manager/Sr Manager - Site Reliability Engineering

  • Full-time

Company Description

Twitter is what’s happening and what people are talking about right now. For us, life's not about a job, it's about purpose. We believe real change starts with conversation. Here, your voice matters. Come as you are and together we'll do what's right (not what's easy) to serve the public conversation.

Job Description

Who we are

  • As a member of the organization, you will be dedicated to improving the reliability of our end-to-end data and database infrastructure. Your work will integrate directly with our products.
  • Our core infrastructure receives hundreds of millions of tweets per day and serves tens of billions of API requests. We also serve over 2+ billion search queries per day, render millions of ad impressions, and process hundreds of terabytes of log and interaction data daily.
  • We dive deep into difficult operational issues; from the software, systems, automation, and process perspectives. We will understand the challenges around integrating disparate infrastructures into a new facility, processes and procedures.
  • We work with open-source technologies and get involved with different SRE and open source communities.
  • We actively participate in the vision to move away from high operational cost tasks and contribute to services that can shrink and expand based on demand, self-heal, automatically rollout, etc.
  • We will train and invest in our team members and make sure that they are successful in supporting a large variety of systems and products on-premise or in the public cloud.

We’re looking for a technical and industry-experienced engineering manager to join us and lead hardworking engineers who are working to keep Twitter reliable and scalable. The candidate must have experience building and operating production systems either as an engineer or a manager.

We believe passion and personality matter; as such, we need leaders that can manage diverse, smart, and driven engineers while balancing day-to-day people management with moving the business forward both technically and culturally.

What you'll do

  • Mentoring, coaching and empowering the team by giving them the skills, confidence and motivation to make decisions independently that lead to their personal and professional success, and enable them to become technical leaders.

  • Help the individuals on your team to build and execute personal development plans that align with Twitter’s goals and objectives, and understand how their work fits into the bigger picture.

  • Lead SREs in Twitter offices in the US and remotely.

  • Take an active role in driving and evolving the roadmap for the team and SRE Org.

  • Drive cross-team and cross-org alignment around reliability between Product, Platform and Infrastructure engineering teams.

  • Partner with other Engineering Managers to achieve reliability outcomes for their services.

  • Participate in deep technical design discussions within your team, and across partner teams, and ensure that we're building the right systems and keeping the quality high.

Qualifications

Who you are

  • 5+ years of software support, reliability, or operations engineering experience in a production environment, either on bare-metal or public cloud
  • 2+ years experience in successfully developing a team of 4-7 engineers on large-scale projects that included technical deep-dives and production troubleshooting in the areas of distributed systems, code, networking, storage, and operating systems
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to empower teams
  • Experience providing the technical vision for systems and infrastructure teams.
  • Strong perspective and collaborative partnership that inspires change, and motivates engineers to develop simple solutions to sophisticated operational or reliability challenges
  • Built services and systems, have successfully taken projects from inception to production, and are comfortable diving in to provide leadership for major projects when needed
  • Capable of leading a discussion with upper management, and are able to tailor the level of technical detail to suit your audience
  • Some experience supporting or implementing services on any or all of the following: MySQL/PostgreSQL, CloudSQL, Hadoop, Druid, Terraform, Kubernetes, GCP products
