Job Description
This position at Turnitin will report to the Vice President, Deputy General Counsel and will be a key member of the Turnitin legal team. The attorney will assist with the development, refinement and execution of the Company’s privacy strategy, working closely and in tandem with the Engineering/Tech, Product, Information Security and Marketing teams on matters relating to data privacy, security, technology and related compliance.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic, practical and technology-savvy attorney with a deep, foundational expertise in privacy, particularly domestic and international consumer data protection legislation. The successful candidate must be practical and comfortable balancing legal risks and business strategy; if you are not comfortable in this calibration zone, this is not the right opportunity for you. You must be a team player, with the ability to distill and practically apply privacy requirements, solution-oriented, and be focused on the pursuit of excellence in providing legal advice.
Prior in-house experience ideally at a tech company is strongly preferred but not required.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice, guidance and support on a wide variety of global privacy program needs, including privacy requirements, privacy impact assessment activities, privacy by design leadership, data governance, contracting and incidence response.
- Analyze, document and communicate the impact of privacy laws, regulations and updates on the business and operations to internal stakeholders, including developing, updating and/or revising privacy policies and related procedures as necessary and appropriate.
- Support privacy and compliance risk assessments to identify existing and emerging risks and support the development of practical business processes to minimize such risks.
- Review and/or draft privacy agreements, including vendor and customer contracts (such DPAs and related documents).
- Monitor and remain current on changes to global privacy, security and compliance laws, regulatory enforcement and industry landscape to stay ahead of evolutions, trends and best practices to inform privacy strategy and program roadmap.
- Design and deliver awareness and training to internal global audiences.
- Assist in managing outside counsel in privacy, security, compliance and consumer related investigations and litigations, as well as in acquisition due diligence and general counseling matters.
- Support privacy and compliance due diligence and subsequent company integration in corporate acquisitions, investments, and other business initiatives.
Qualifications
- J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school and be an active member in good standing of a state bar.
- 7+ years’ experience in a law firm or in-house corporate department, with strong and well-established background and knowledge of global privacy, security, and data localization laws (such as GDPR, CCPA, COPPA, FERPA).
- Privacy certification such as CIPP/US, CIPP/EU, CIPT a plus.
- Creative and solution oriented, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Tech-savvy with a willingness to learn more.
- Comfortable with taking initiative and leading projects.
- Excellent judgment and analytical skills with the ability to strategically assess and mitigate risk, while achieving business goals.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills; ability to simplify complex legal requirements.
- Collaborative team player who subscribes to the philosophy that there is no “I” in team; a can-do attitude, with a willingness to “roll up your sleeves” to get the job; dedicated worker who is responsive and provides timely advice.

Additional Information
The expected annual base salary range for this position is: $139,523/year to $232,538/year. This position is bonus eligible / commission-based. As a Remote-First company, actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if extended, and is determined by work location and a range of other relevant factors, including but not limited to: experience, skills, degrees, licensures, certifications, and other job-related factors. Internal equity, market and organizational factors are also considered.
