Job Description

Turnitin is a pioneer in education technology with its roots in academic integrity, delivering flexible assessment solutions to higher education institutions, high schools, and graduate programs. With the broadest and deepest applications of AI for education, Turnitin is building innovative new products for the next decade of education. We are seeking an experienced design leader to help us increase our velocity to deliver knowledge, products, and capabilities to help educational institutions empower student outcomes with academic integrity. As a Principal UX Designer, you will be responsible for defining design vision for strategic initiatives and scaling your design sense to raise the bar on the craft of design across the team. You partner with executive leaders to craft elegant design solutions across existing and future educational products at global scale. Your design vision will inspire work across our products as you coach the design team in craft.

A day in the life

The Principal UX Designer works with each team member as well as product and engineering stakeholders on a day-to-day basis. The principal designer will spend time on team management tasks, design reviews, and not just lead the vision, but sometimes roll-up their sleeves to contribute to the UX vision.

  • Sets vision for the organization and influences product strategy roadmap. Leads the discovery and concept design phases of design work. 
  • Champions for user-centered design culture. Drives creative process and collaboration with cross-functional partners to propose new ideas and strategies. 
  • Models behavior that exemplifies Turnitin elements in their team. Raises the design bar for the organization.
  • Provides coaching and feedback, with an emphasis on growing senior ICs and leadership capability.
  • Creates and drives adoption of design guidelines, mechanisms, best practices, process and tools.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in design, human-computer interaction (HCI) or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8+ years of industry experience in UX design or related discipline.
  • Experience in delivering long-term design vision for solutions that are large in scope and complexity.
  • A strong portfolio of the candidate’s personal design work and design team deliverables under your leadership, demonstrating user-centered, multi-platform and scalable design solutions.
  • Experience building effective mental models for user behavior and motivations based on qualitative and quantitative research.

Desirable 

  • Experience in driving viable UX frameworks and product architectures in highly ambiguous environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver large- scale strategic design initiatives with a bias toward scalable systems and patterns. 
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Tracking record of successfully upleveling the quality of design out from a team and promoting strong creative team culture.
