The Design Manager is responsible for maintaining design intent, coordinating fielddriven design clarifications and changes, and supporting construction execution to ensure quality, safety, schedule certainty, and successful project outcomes. The role acts as the primary interface for designrelated matters between the Owner, Engineer of Record (EoR), specialty consultants, equipment vendors, and construction teams within a live construction environment.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate all designrelated activities during the construction phase of the project, providing clear direction and oversight to the design management and technical coordination team.
- Set a clear strategy and ambition for the design management team in line with project goals, construction priorities, and commissioning requirements.
- Demonstrate strong leadership skills by leading, mentoring, and supporting project team members to ensure delivery against all role accountabilities and project objectives.
- Lead communications with the client on designrelated matters and provide oversight of design management services in alignment with overall project management objectives.
- Participate in Owner/Architect/Contractor (OAC) meetings, design coordination meetings, and meetings with senior leadership, Directors, and staff, including preparation and delivery of presentations as required.
- Manage designrelated RFIs, field clarifications, submittals, and change requests in collaboration with the Engineer of Record (EoR) and project leadership.
- Ensure design responses are timely, coordinated across disciplines, and aligned with construction sequencing, safety, and quality requirements.
- Review contractor and vendor submittals for compliance with design intent and technical requirements.
- Coordinate design updates driven by equipment procurement, vendor drawings, and installation constraints.
- Maintain alignment between architectural, structural, MEP, utilities, process, and manufacturing systems.
- Support BIM coordination, clash detection, and model updates as construction progresses.
- Perform periodic site walks to verify installation aligns with approved design documentation and identify emerging design, quality, or safety risks.
- Support the project Quality Management Program, ensuring compliance with quality standards and supporting participation in ISO audits where applicable.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and act upon ways to enhance internal systems, workflows, and design coordination processes.
- Develop and manage priority plans including risk mitigation strategies, performance measurement through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and management controls aligned with company and project goals.
- Support commissioning and startup activities by ensuring design documentation supports testing, validation, and system integration.
- Coordinate resolution of design issues identified during commissioning and functional testing.
- Oversee the development, review, and delivery of asbuilt drawings, record documents, and turnover packages.
- Support the training and mentorship of current staff, promote an upward career trajectory, and foster a culture of learning, respect, and inclusivity.
- Proactively partner with the talent acquisition team to support recruitment efforts, manage resource needs, and plan for future staffing requirements.
- Act as a role model who drives a onebusiness culture that achieves strong outcomes for people, clients, stakeholders, and society.
- Participate in closeout activities and lessonslearned sessions.
- SOX control responsibilities may be part of this role, which are to be adhered to where applicable.
