Job Description

The MEP Cost & Engineering Manager plays a hybrid role that combines cost management expertise with technical engineering capabilities in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. This professional provides early cost advice, technical assessments, and proactive engineering input to ensure the financial and technical success of vertical construction projects, primarily office buildings, with desirable experience in critical environments such as data centers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide early cost advice during concept and feasibility stages to guide design decisions and budget alignment.
  • Develop and maintain benchmarking databases for MEP systems across various building typologies.
  • Perform quantity take-offs and detailed cost estimates for MEP installations.
  • Conduct technical assessments to evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of proposed MEP solutions.
  • Apply a preventive technical approach, identifying risks and proposing mitigation strategies before execution.
  • Ensure compliance with Colombian regulations applicable to MEP systems (e.g., NSR-10, RETIE, RETSIT, RAS).
  • Support the development of cost plans and procurement strategies for MEP packages.
  • Review and approve subcontractor proposals, manage contracts, and change requests.
  • Monitor project budgets, expenditures, and cost performance against deliverables.
  • Review payment applications and ensure proper invoicing and financial close-out.
  • Lead value engineering exercises to optimize cost and performance.
  • Interface with clients, design teams, and contractors throughout all project phases.
  • Collaborate with BIM and design teams to validate technical compatibility and resolve clashes.
  • Utilize digital tools (e.g., CostX, AutoCAD, Excel, BIM platforms) for cost and technical analysis.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge management by documenting lessons learned and best practices.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in MEP cost management and engineering roles.
  • Strong understanding of MEP systems and construction cost structures.
  • Familiarity with Colombian building codes and MEP regulations.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and cost estimation tools.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and detail-oriented.

Desirable:

  • Experience in office buildings and critical infrastructure projects (e.g., data centers).
  • Working towards RICS membership or recently chartered.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with BIM-based quantity take-off tools.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and other design review platforms.
  • Fluency in English.
