Job Description

The Design Manager provides 3 primary functions over time:

  1. During Reference Design 2 – ensures design deliverables required for Tender are established and communicated to the Design team; that Design team adhere to processes; and that the Design team submit deliverables in accordance with the programme.
  2. For and During Tender – supports Scope production which defines requirements for Design elements of M400 and M500 scope; supports definition of Tender questions and requirements; supports review of Tender design deliverables.
  3. Following M400/M500 Contract Award – support Contractor design elements; ensure that Contractor Design team adheres to processes; ensure that Contractor Design team submits deliverables in accordance with the programme and at the appropriate quality.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the design process for  projects.
  • Ensure design deliverables meet required standards and are delivered on time.
  • Produce fully coordinated designs that integrate with the Project Execution Plan, regularly monitoring and updating progress as needed.
  • Coordinate with clients and stakeholders to understand project requirements, set design goals, and ensure alignment with client standards and objectives.
  • Provide technical assistance within the clients organization, conduct site inspections and audits, and prepare project reports and presentations.
  • Deliver expert infrastructure design and planning services to complete projects against specified Key Performance Indicators, considering scope, quality, safety, budgets, and timeframes.
  • Conduct research to understand the company's design needs.
  • Ensure all designs are delivered within budget and time constraints.
  • Liaise with interface team members to ensure cohesiveness across all areas of design.
  • Ensure compliance with industry and quality standards, regulations, and best practice methodologies.
  • Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors and suppliers, to ensure effective communication and beneficial outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, operational and environmental legislation, and professional practice standards.
  • Manage design reviews and co-ordination meetings; ensuring a fully coordinated Design strategy is in place and work closely with discipline lead designers to deliver.
  • Perform additional tasks or duties as required or assigned as part of the role
  • Minimum Level 8 degree (or equivalent) in relevant subject area e.g., engineering, construction, project management.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years’ experience in Project Design, with 7+ years’ experience in design management, preferable in a large infrastructure project.
  • Experience in leading and managing design teams.
  • Experience working with various design tools and software.

  • Ability to manage multiple design projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to co-ordinate and communicate important information across the team.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner that is positive, open, transparent and is a clear and effective communicator.
