Job Description

The Athletic Trainer will provide all athletic training services at area high schools to ensure the delivery of medical and rehabilitative care to student athletes. The athletic trainer will be educated in preventative, rehabilitative and emergency care for all student athletes to achieve a maximum level of function using various therapeutic exercises, activities, modalities, and skills in the athletic training facility and on the field. The Athletic Trainer will comply with the policy and procedures of the department, organization, high school, and JCAHO requirements. 

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Develop plans for providing athletic training coverage at all interscholastic athletic events identified in the athletic training contract.

2. Establish and maintain a budget for athletic training supplies/equipment.

3. Develop comprehensive venue and condition specific emergency action plans.

4. Establish a working relationship with a designated team physician and community physicians.

5. Establish a working relationship with school nursing staff.

6. Maintain adequate medical records on all injuries and rehabilitation procedures.

7. Comply with all policies regarding health care delivery as indicated by the school systems regulations and outlined in the school’s athletic training program policies and procedures manual where applicable.

8. Responsible for assisting with a variety of non-essential & non-clinical tasks to support the quality of care within the Rehabilitation Department.

9. Demonstrates strong clinical athletic training skills.

10. Completes annual concussion training per state requirements.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or related field; Masters preferred

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES

Must be BOC certified and possess or be eligible for MA state athletic training licensure. CPR/AED certification required. NPI Number Required.

EXPERIENCE:

One-year clinical experience preferred; New graduates encouraged to apply.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Applied Knowledge: Athletic trainers must have knowledge about a large range of medical conditions. Assessment and evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be needed.

Decision-Making Skills: Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.

Attention to Detail: should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situation when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff, and families.

Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.

Working Conditions

Physical Environment: Work is medium demand. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects. Medium strength is required to position patients for examination. May assist patients as needed, helping them on and off the exam table and/or bed or playing surface. Must be able to work in outdoor conditions.

Manual Dexterity: Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate computer keyboard, dexterity to provide quantitative testing and manual treatment techniques to a wide variety of patients.

Audible/Visual Demands: Requires ability to see computer screen and reports. Visually assess injury and functional status of patients, audibly assess patient subjective complaints

 

Scope of Position Responsibilities

For Supervision: No Supervisory Responsibilities

For Internal/External

Relationships: Works closely with other staff in a collaborative team environment, interactions may include MelroseWakefield hospital staff, patients and their family members and members of the community.

Limits of Authority: Establishes independent work plan and prioritizes using established policy, procedure, and protocol to ensure timely completion of assigned work. Expected to seek supervision regarding issues which do not either have a clear precedent or protocol.
