Job Description

At Trainline, SEO plays a vital role within the Commercial team and there is significant opportunity for growth. We’re looking for a Technical SEO Manager that has a growth mindset and can think commercially, who will own technical SEO globally.   

 

Being highly visible in search engines is critical to the success of Trainline. As such, you will join the SEO team and work alongside colleagues in Growth, Tech and Product to implement scaled solutions that drive the performance and growth of Trainline across the UK and international markets. 

 

The role requires applicants who can bring a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience in technical SEO. We are looking for someone that has a passion for SEO, digital marketing, creative thinking and learning who can generate and execute ideas for increasing the web presence of the world’s leading independent rail and coach travel platform.   

 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Showing a deep understanding of how search engines and web crawlers work. An ability to translate this into actionable SEO recommendations that are measurable and add value to business performance. 

  • Thorough understanding across a range of industry tools, analytics platforms, and SEO techniques to ensure your strategy is well considered and you can support others. 

  • Understanding HTTP status codes, redirects, canonicals, hreflang, meta robots and other compliancy factors that may impact Googlebot’s ability to crawl Trainline effectively. 

  • Solving complex indexation and crawlability issues, giving recommendations to improve SEO performance at a global level. 

  • Giving detailed site architecture recommendations using appropriate tools and techniques that aligns with the wider SEO strategy and provides longevity to the business. 

  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of how SEO can impact business performance, determine the why and problem solve to inform the team roadmap. 

  • Shaping, executing and owning our global technical SEO strategy to solve complex SEO problems (using large scale data analysis) that can have a material difference to our commercial performance. 

  • Recommend and implement best practice on-page SEO improvements – schema markup, header tags, titles, internal links etc., that ensure Trainline is best-in-class. 

  • Technical understanding of website coding languages including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Python with the ability to troubleshoot and identify errors that can affect SEO performance. 

  • Strong understanding of JavaScript / Rendering SEO, and its impact on visibility in major search engines. 

  • Confident to work alone or as part of a small team to develop SEO roadmaps, project plans and BAU workflows that focus on delivering value. 

  • Respond reactively whenever necessary to changes in performance, which may be attributable to factors outside of our control. For example, competitor market entry, Google algorithm changes and engineering errors, which impact performance. 

  • Stay abreast of industry changes and updates – and more importantly, provide an expert view on these updates to share knowledge and keep key stakeholders informed. 

  • Identify strategic opportunities and prioritise them against other tactical actions to achieve a balance of short-term and long-term performance. 

  • Conduct SEO experiments across locales, using rigorous approaches and measurement methods (A/B tests, statistical methods) and proving their effectiveness. 

  • Coach and mentor SEO Executives in producing best-in-class deliverables and ensuring excellence in SEO performance. 

  • Manage project deliverables and deadlines to ensure work is delivered on time and in a format that is ready to go. 

  • Maintain the technical SEO backlog and ensure that all tickets raised to developers are completed, fully spec’d and sized for impact. 

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • A minimum of 3-4 years SEO experience working with enterprise size websites. 

  • Worked with developer, SEO and non-technical teams to deliver results. 

  • Very skilled Microsoft Office user, especially Excel. 

  • Knowledge or experience of working with a CMS such as Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal or Umbraco etc. 

  • Extensive experience with essential SEO tools such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Screaming Frog, Botify, SEMRush, STAT, Ahrefs etc. 

  • Positive attitude, flexible and can work collaboratively. 

  • A hands-on operator who will get into the detail and deliver the strategy and work required to succeed. 

  • Enjoys and is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Enthusiastic, energetic and creative, likes to bring ideas to the table. 

  • High attention to detail. 

  • Confident communicator who can work with different stakeholder levels. 

  • Can recognise quick wins that can drive the most value and translate those into actionable tasks. 

  • Results-oriented and strong sense of ownership of projects.
