Job Description

Tradeshift is seeking an Engineering Manager for its San Francisco location.  As Engineering Manager, you will be leading 1-2 software engineering teams to successful delivery, perform people management for the software engineers on those teams, and give input to developing the strategic direction for the subject matter of those teams.

Leading a software development team means making those teams strong, happy and efficient while holding them accountable for delivering on commitments. The focus is on empowerment and to build teams who cares about and owns what they are building. The engineering manager needs to be very strong on agile processes and should be able to guide the team on how to scope software projects so value is delivered continuously. The engineering manager involves stakeholders in understanding the current status, outlook on progress and risks. This will include communicating with customers and end-users from time to time.

As People Manager for the software engineers on the team, the engineering manager is responsible for the individual engineer’s career growth and coaching the engineer into being a well functioning professional who understands the bigger picture and the purpose with the work being done. The engineering manager coaches engineers to be self driven contributors who solves most of their own problems by using the tools and advice given in the regular 1:1 conversations. The engineering manager sets short and long term goals together with the engineer to facilitate all aspects of their growth. As new positions are opened or become vacant, the engineering manager will also function as hiring manager. As such, there will be coordination with recruiting to screen, interview and eventually select candidates for being offered positions on the team, in a timely fashion.

Beyond the immediate work with the teams, the engineering manager will also from time to time work with higher levels of engineering management and product management to provide information as the basis for developing and updating the strategic development direction for the area being developed. The engineering manager will also participate and provide content for cross-team departmental coordination activities, and revenue line wide coordinating activities such as workshops, all-hands meetings, quarterly reviews, etc.

Qualifications

Must have Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or closely related field and minimum two years of software engineering experience.  Required experience must also include 2 years in the following, specific areas:

  • Maven, Intellij, GIT, Jenkins, Docker, Postgres, and JSON; and

  • Gathering user requirements, planning projects, scoping work and doing design, implementation and test of software.

  • Required experience must also include at least 1 year in Java.

International travel at least twice a year for a week at a time is required.
