Job Description

Managing Editor: Job Overview

As the Managing Editor, you play a key role in our news operation. You are responsible for the day-to-day editorial workflow, ensuring that our coverage is timely, accurate, and impactful across both print and digital platforms. You will bridge the gap between high-level editorial strategy and oversight of the day-to-day news cycle for all products at The Hamilton Spectator.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with other editors, you will determine the daily story priorities, assign stories, and ensure all content aligns with the newspaper’s ethical standards, and legal requirements. You will also act as the gatekeeper for key stories and legally sensitive stories.
  • Manage a diverse team of reporters and editors. Provide consistent feedback, conduct performance reviews, and foster a supportive culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Help ensure deadlines—both digital-first and print—are met.
  • Work closely with the digital team to optimize content for SEO, social media engagement, and newsletter growth.
  • Help manage the editorial budget, including freelance spending, and other staff expenses.
  • Innovate, and help foster a culture of innovation, around new products and new ways to engage our audience.
  • Help develop ethical ways to use Artificial Intelligence to improve our journalism and make our operation as efficient as possible.

Qualifications

Experience: 7+ years in journalism, with at least 3 years in a leadership or senior editing role.

Judgment: Exceptional news judgment and a deep understanding of Torstar/CP style and media law.

Tech Savvy: Proficiency with Content Management Systems, Artificial Intelligence and analytics tools like Marfeel.

Adaptability: The ability to remain calm and decisive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to navigate the interests of the community and newsroom staff.
