Job Description
Metroland is excited to be participating in Canada’s 'Local Journalism Initiative' which aims to which aims to promote local journalism in underserved communities in Canada.
Parrysound.com is seeking an Indigenous reporter to tell stories relevant to the Indigenous residents of Parry Sound and its six neighbouring First Nations communities – Henvey Inlet, Magnetawan, Moose Deer Point, Shawanaga, Wahta and Wasauksing.
During this temporary full-time contract, you will be expected to produce a minimum of 5-7 stories weekly which will appear on parrysound.com. Your stories will be available for upload to other media outlets and the many Metroland publication websites.
The contract ends March 31, 2027.

Annual Salary: $44,059.01 - $ 56,829.84
While you work virtually, you must be available to complete interviews and take photographs in the area.
Your salary will be paid by Metroland, with a portion coming through funding from the Government of Canada.
The successful candidate will focus on telling stories that help share information with and from Indigenous communities and that give voice to the experience of urban Indigenous residents and the issues they are facing. Ideally, the reporter will be a member of a local First Nation, so that coverage will be led by, for, and with those communities, in pursuit of the principle of narrative sovereignty.
Qualifications
- A journalism degree, diploma or equivalent experience is preferred
- Experience working in a newsroom is preferred
- Curious individual with a knack for storytelling
- Proven news judgment and a strong work ethic
- Effective organizational skills, ability to manage time and prioritize tasks appropriately
- Photography skills
- Must be prepared to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
- Must have access to reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
- Understanding of Canadian Libel Law and Canadian Press Style
