Metroland Media, an employer that celebrates diversity, is looking for an editorial assistant to join its fast-paced newsroom. Working remotely, the successful candidate will provide support to editors and reporters in producing content for the multicultural community of Toronto. 

The Scarborough Mirror is the source of news and information in the community, delivering more than 195,000 newspapers weekly and reaching hundreds of thousands of readers every month on Toronto.com.  

Our roots run deep. Since 1962, we have been keeping residents of Scarborough informed on issues that impact their lives, including local government, education, health care, crime and community events. 

We continue to evolve, grow and change with our readers and our communities. We invest in our teams and offer ongoing educational opportunities to remain current with media trends and readers’ needs. We fuse their expertise with first-party data and insight from our local community advisory council to inform our coverage.

Job Description

The Scarborough Mirror is looking for an enthusiastic and curious editorial assistant with a strong work ethic, positive attitude, passion for storytelling and interest in community journalism.

The successful candidate in this entry-level position will support editors and reporters in producing unique and engaging content for print, online and social media. 

They’ll enter submitted content into online content management system with an eye for good SEO, write engaging posts for social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, and play a key role in managing the Toronto.com events calendar, offering promotion and coverage of community events and festivals — big and small. Helpful content on road closures, infrastructure updates, things to do and more will serve to inform and assist readers in their everyday lives. 

Qualifications

You are a motivated self-starter with insatiable curiosity and an appetite for information. You bring together information and ideas to produce straightforward yet compelling text and source eye-catching photos in a fast-paced, deadline-driven and demanding environment.

You are organized, can prioritize tasks appropriately and manage your time effectively. You’re a team-oriented individual who can build professional relationships with team members and the community. 

You understand and appreciate the power of social media and good SEO and know how to use them to connect to a wide audience and enhance a story’s reach.

You can work remotely.
