Job Description

As an Editorial Content Strategist, you are an advisor to newsroom leadership, sharing insights on how to drive new subscriptions and retain existing customers. By analyzing data and sharing your conclusions with newsroom stakeholders, you are the key newsroom conduit for propelling our digital transformation and translating our in-depth first-party data into actionable insights. You draw on your journalism and data/marketing backgrounds to track evolution in audience metrics, develop goals and targets for the Torstar’s sites and social channels, and motivate our newsrooms to remain agile and adaptable. The Editorial Strategist works closely with senior editorial leadership, Marketing, Digital Product, and Data teams to drive change on a functional and cultural level.

Role Objectives:
 

  • Gather pieces of first party data from multiple sources, analyze it  and turn the data into actionable insights for all newsroom stakeholders
  • Implement and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for multiple editorial teams with content analytics that speak to acquisition, reach, churn, retention, path to subscription, engagement and more
  • Work closely with editorial leadership, including senior editors and the editor-in-chief
  • Empower senior managers to utilize data to strengthen their decisions on what content to do and not to do
  • Stimulate cooperation across multiple Torstar newsrooms, Marketing, Data Analytics, and Digital Product
  • Identify barriers to readership and subscriber growth, and develop creative solutions based on data

Qualifications

Technical Skills & Requirements:

  • Degree in Journalism, Marketing, Data Science or equivalent
  • Deep understanding of digital analytics platforms and ability to derive insights from data
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Adobe Analytics, Parse.ly, Tableau, and Google Analytics
  • Experience with content monetization and content analytics
  • Insight and appreciation for journalism: leverage news judgment alongside audience and subscription data to uphold the Star’s editorial values
  • Business Analytics: ability to use quantitative methods to analyze data and recommend content, scheduling of stories, and creative solutions
  • Firm grasp of emerging digital tools, trends, and channels
  • Diplomacy and well developed interpersonal skills, with the ability and desire to work collaboratively with others
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Toronto Star’s editorial standards
