Job Description

The Public Editor’s Associate works in partnership with the Public Editor to fulfill the office’s mandate of providing accountability and transparency to readers, in line with the Star’s commitment to trusted journalism, and in assessing complaints and concerns from readers about the Star’s journalism across its platforms. The Associate also must make corrections and amendments to stories, when warranted. In assessing complaints, the Associate evaluates and edits copy for quality and validity of information, ensuring that Star content is accurate, legally complaint, and meets the Star’s rigorous journalistic standards.

Role Objectives:

  • Manage daily corrections process for print and online platforms
  • Conduct daily triage of Public Editor inbox and make editorial judgment calls on whether corrections are warranted
  • Respond to reader and external stakeholder questions and concerns about accuracy and editorial standards
  • Work collaboratively with newsroom editors and reporters with tact and diplomacy
  • Write and publish corrections and clarifications for print and append real-time updates and corrections on online articles
  • Utilizes strong research skills to independently investigate validity of complaints brought forward to the office
  • Manage unpublishing requests received by the Public Editor’s office
  • Work in partnership with the Public Editor to identify and resolve various issues to uphold the Star’s standards of trust and transparency
  • Append editorial and legal notes in the Emma archiving system
  • Work with the newsroom on all matters related to the office in the Public Editor’s absence

Qualifications

Technical Skills & Requirements:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Journalism
  • Strong news judgment, acute problem-solving abilities, and ability to make important decisions in a high-stakes, deadline-oriented environment
  • Thorough understanding of the Torstar Journalistic Standards Guide, along with legal and ethical requirements for Star journalism
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong people skills
  • Wide knowledge of local, national, and international issues
  • Able to simultaneously manage multiple projects and tasks;
  • Detail-oriented with a proven ability to work effectively on deadline
  • A proven ability to identify, anticipate, and solve complex issues in a creative manner quickly and effectively, while keeping within Star’s policy on trust and transparency
  • Working knowledge of Newsgate is an asset
