Thungela Resources [Thungela means “to ignite” in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production. It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.
Job Description
- Ensure the effective governance and execution of all capital and cost management processes for Thungela Resources.
- Responsible for the capital and cost management processes and data integrity on all applicable financial systems.
- Drive capital and cost management input into business planning processes, investment evaluations and investment review committee (IRC)
- Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, understand and deliver on their operational needs, and identify and resolve issues timeously.
- Participate as an effective team member and work collaboratively with leaders, peers, and others to achieve business goals.
- Contribute to the broader business by working with other teams in such a way that it optimises the overall business results.
- Contribute to the development of the budget for the Corporate Finance & Capital Management department.
- Identify any opportunities for improved cost management and address with applicable action plans.
- Analyse and provide input to the Business Performance tools; Business Plan (BP) and associated budgets, forecasts and KPIs which allow the Executive Team to manage the business effectively.
- Provide input to the commercial reporting process to meet business requirements
This role is in the Corporate Finance & Capital Management Department and is at a Band 6 level reporting to the Capital Management Manager.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or related discipline (NQF Level 7)
Advantageous:
- Post-graduate qualification in Finance, Accounting or related discipline
- CA(SA) or CIMA
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Capital Management or Capital Projects / Commercial environment
- Experience in making commercial judgements in a commodity-specific business commercial function, with significant emphasis on Coal
Additional Information
Operations:
• Proficient knowledge of mining and other relevant legislation applicable to Thungela Resources incl.:
o Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 2002, Act 28 of 2002
o Companies Act, No 71 of 2008
• Proficient knowledge of financial analysis, assessment and financial modelling (including business valuation)
• Advanced knowledge of all relevant financial systems with a specific focus on SAP & HFM.
Commercial:
• Proficient understanding of the mining industry and value chain
• Proficient knowledge of data analysis and reporting techniques, processes and tools
Management:
• Proficient knowledge of stakeholder management
Compliance:
• Proficient knowledge of Thungela Resources Finance policies, procedures, standards and systems
