Thungela Resources [Thungela means “to ignite” in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production.  It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.

Job Description

As the Head of Domestic Marketing, you will be expected to develop, implement and review the domestic marketing strategy including all the domestic marketing relationships and the sales and trading portfolio. You will also be expected to manage any identified risks as well as develop new business and maintain a profitable business across the domestic market.

More of your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing new products as required by the applicable domestic market and lead the commercialization and operational production thereof
  • Building and maintaining solid customer service, third-party trade suppliers and key stakeholder relationships
  • Developing the commercial mandates and leading all term and key contract negotiations across the domestic market(s) ensuring profitable and margin-positive outcomes
  • Owning and driving maximum commercial value for domestic sales in line with the book management principle
  • Serving as required on advisory authority to the JV Board and responsibility for related contract management
  • Keeping abreast and informed on the thermal coal commercial realizations across applicable domestic markets including developments on overall supply and demand and price levels and determinations
  • Developing the South African origin trading strategy and plan, taking cognisance of TFR performance
  • Developing the plan to execute the domestic marketing strategy for Thungela, which includes the pricing strategy for each of the complex market sectors
  • Building, developing and maintaining integrated and required systems and processes to ensure that the domestic marketing team can safely deliver on the domestic marketing plan and adhere to governance
  • Leading, assisting and providing the marketing input into Thungela projects (M&A and/or BD and Strategy) as required and in line with the Thungela strategy
  • Representing Thungela on relevant operating committees (RBCT - Port, and Mafube Joint Venture)

Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ Degree / B-Tech in Marketing Commerce, Business Administration, Finance or related discipline (NQF level 7)
  • Advantageous: Formal Project Management Qualification

Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in Marketing and Strategic Operations Planning specifically in relation to the mining or bulk commodity industry
  • Minimum of 3 years of Senior Management experience

  • Advanced knowledge of coal markets, including trading and logistics
  • Advanced knowledge of managing high-value negotiations
  • Proficient knowledge on the use of derivatives
  • Advanced knowledge of the development of commercial strategies
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of contractual frameworks, procedures and systems
  • Advanced knowledge of domestic and export trading within a commodity environment
