As the Social Performance Officer, you will take on the responsibility to proactively engage in order to bring material and sustainable impact to stakeholders and communities we operate in, lead the management of social risks, impacts, and grievances, embed inclusive & equitable practice as a way of doing business, ensuring economic participation for diverse groups and contribute towards the timeous delivery of socio-economic commitments including the implementation of the Social & Labour Plan.

Thungela Resources [Thungela means “to ignite” in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production. It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.
Job Description
The main responsibilities for this position will be but not limited to:
- Facilitate and maintain good relations with the communities and stakeholders
- Support the implementation of the applicable Thungela Corporate Affairs and Social Performance policies and standards
- Develop, review, implement and monitor community engagement platforms and represent Zibulo Colliery
- Identify and implement initiatives that address community needs and ensure socio-economic development through the systematic and integrated implementation of the SLP, targeted CSI and community partnerships
- Manage the governance of and ensure timeous delivery of Corporate Social Investment Projects
- Participating in the implementation of Social & Labour Plan commitments
- Participate in regular initiatives, inspections and audits relating to Social Performance and of the operation
- Lead the implementation of the Social Incidents and Grievance management process
- Identify, communicate, and monitor the mine social risks, Impacts and Human Rights risks
- Compile and coordinate the submission of stakeholder engagement reports, commitment registers and other social performance reports
- Develop, review, implement and monitor the operating sites’ social performance management plans in line with the social policy and ESG ambition
This role is in the Social Performance department at Band 7 and reports to the Social Performance Specialist
Qualifications
- Diploma/ Degree Social Science / Public Relations/ Environmental (NQF 6/7)
- Certificate in Project Management (advantageous)
- Experience in the mining industry would be advantageous
- Experience in Community Development or a similar role in a socio-economic development field
- Be in possession of a valid driver’s license, must have a vehicle or have access to a vehicle
Additional Information

- Understanding of the workings of Provincial, Local and District Municipalities
- Sound business acumen and communication skills, including the use of various South African languages
