Job Description

As the Pit Foreman, you will be expected to comply with all relevant Codes of Practices, Standard Operating Procedures and Legal Requirements as well as model safe behaviour.

More of your responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to achieving Safety, Health, and Environmental targets
  • Conducting relevant mini risk assessments / hazard identification
  • Knowing and understanding the risk profile for his / her work area
  • Examining drilled holes and measure temperature, depth, for water & collapse of hole
  • Clearly demarcating the area prior to any explosives being brought onto the site and ensure that all vehicle entry points are clearly marked
  • Fence off all approaches to the blasting area and display the relevant signage
  • Recording all data on log sheet as well as observing any sponcom
  • Collecting all explosives from the magazine and load the explosives
  • Assisting in charging up the holes, ensuring accurate amount (kg) of explosives in each hole
  • Walk the line and ensure correct tying method
  • Ensuring bench is closed off and guarding the line ensuring no unauthorised access
  • Cleaning up the area after the blast e.g. flags and sign boards to be taken away
  • Opening the bench as soon as the area is safe

Qualifications

  • Grade 12/ Equivalent
  • Opencast Blasting Certificate
  • Blasting Assistant Course (MQA level 03) theory & practice
  • LDV licence
  • Competent A Certificate

Experience & Knowledge

  • Opencast Coal Mining experience
  • Previous experience as a Foreman
  • Knowledge of Coal South Africa blasting procedures, regulations & practices
  • Knowledge of Coal South Africa safety standards, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation pertaining to blasting
  • Basic knowledge of coal mining process
  • Knowledge of tying methods
