Join our team as the General Engineering Superintendent where you will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of plans to manage Thungela Resources Engineering Assets, Resources & Infrastructure – availability of machinery and equipment and managing resources and people to achieve planned production targets.

Thungela Resources [Thungela means “to ignite” in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production. It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.
Job Description
This role is your opportunity to effectively implement the Asset Optimisation Strategy at the Operation. The focus of the role is to manage Resources and Infrastructure – availability of machinery and equipment and managing resources and people to achieve planned production targets.
- Maintenance of process plant machinery: crushers, screens, conveyor installations, stackers, reclaimers, gravity separation cyclones, water recovery thickeners, compressors etc
- Root cause analysis, report writing, problem solving and trend analysis.
- SIMM (Structural Inspection and Maintenance Management) custodian
- Maintain safe work practices and a safe working environment by ensuring that legal requirements and group working standards and policies related to engineering are implemented and followed on the Operations and Projects
- Optimise planned maintenance schedules of machinery and equipment ensuring that equipment is effectively maintained. Management of Maintenance Contracts and OEM’s. Plan and implement inspections and major equipment outages. Support the reliability team in root cause problem solving
- Research and implement best practice systems with respect to cost, maintenance, safety and people management. Build new systems as required and participate in Maintenance Improvement Company Initiatives. Encourage and acknowledge innovation among team members for continuous improvement
- Effective People management, ensuring that roles are well defined and clarified and that competencies and learning paths are developed to human capacity and capability
- Financial Budgeting & Management
- Participate in ad hoc projects providing input into drafting of scope for new projects
- Effectively Manage contractors and suppliers’ relationships ensuring compliance to Thungela standards
- Utilise work management KPI’s to drive equipment reliability
- Utilise Enablon and work management to enable ensure safety governance and ensure safety behaviour
This role is in the Engineering department at a Band 6 level reporting to the Section Engineer.
Qualifications
- N3 Technical certificate and recognized Trade Test in (Mechanical: Boilermaker/Fitting) or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
Experience & Knowledge
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience as an Engineering Foreman
- Safety & Risk Management Course (preferrable)
- Knowledge of Relevant Legislation including: The Mine Health and Safety Act, Minerals and Energy Act, Basic Conditions of Employment and Environmental Legislation
- An in-depth knowledge of technical engineering aspects such as outside equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and South Africa Bureau of Standards (SABS)
Additional Information
- A good working knowledge and understanding of machinery and equipment used in the Mining industry
- Aware of best practices and new technologies relating to Engineering Principles and Processes
- Computer Literacy: MS Office and SAP
- Valid driver’s license
- In possession or able to obtain a valid Certificate of Fitness
