Landfill Operator

Company Description
Thomas County is now accepting applications for a Landfill Operator. This hands-on position is responsible for the daily operations, upkeep, and safety of the Thomas County Landfill. Under the direction of the Landfill Supervisor, this role ensures compliance with county, state, and environmental regulations while assisting the public and operating heavy equipment.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Open and close the landfill during approved hours of operation.
- Assist the public in proper disposal of solid waste and enforce disposal guidelines.
- Collect and remit disposal fees; maintain transaction records and issue receipts.
- Operate heavy machinery including compactors, loaders, trucks, backhoes, dozers, and more.
- Ensure proper daily trash coverage and landfill cleanliness.
- Monitor weather and site conditions to ensure safety and compliance.
- Inspect incoming loads for compliance and remove unauthorized materials.
- Maintain accurate records required by KDHE and Thomas County.
- Assist in the handling and preparation of household hazardous waste and recyclable materials.
- Report hazards, track landfill activity, and maintain closed landfill areas.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- One year of related experience is preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- CDL Class B preferred (or willingness to obtain).
- First Aid/CPR certification and Hazardous Materials Level 1 training preferred.
- Ability to read instructions, follow safety procedures, and operate heavy equipment.
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- Working knowledge of landfill regulations and environmental safety practices.
- Strong mechanical skills and the ability to maintain and operate machinery.
- Good communication skills and the ability to assist the public courteously.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and lift 25 lbs.

Work Environment:
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions with exposure to fumes, dust, and mechanical hazards.
- Loud noise levels and on-call or weekend shifts may be required during times of the year.
