Company Description
Thomas County is accepting applications for a Landfill Supervisor. This full-time position oversees the daily operations of the Thomas County Landfill, Recycling Center, and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facilities. Under the supervision of the Board of County Commissioners, the Landfill Supervisor is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental regulations while maintaining the safety, efficiency, and cleanliness of landfill operations.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise landfill, recycling, HHW staff and operations.
- Operate heavy equipment (loaders, compactors, trucks) and assist with daily hands-on duties.
- Maintain accurate financial records, customer transactions, and prepare monthly statements.
- Monitor and report waste tonnage and materials in compliance with KDHE regulations.
- Maintain permits, safety records, and compliance documentation.
- Coordinate routine equipment maintenance and oversee equipment fueling and service.
- Enforce proper disposal procedures and ensure public safety during landfill use.
- Direct landfill users and collect required disposal fees.
- Maintain clean and organized facilities.
- Monitor environmental conditions (wind, etc.) and manage closed landfill areas.
- Coordinate recycling operations and HHW handling and transport.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of three years related experience and/or training.
- Supervisory experience is highly preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- CDL Class A or B with tanker and air brake endorsement preferred or ability to obtain.
- Certification in Landfill Operator Training and HHW Training required (within one year of hire).
- Proficiency in managing budgets, records, and regulatory reports.
- Strong leadership, mechanical, and problem-solving skills.
Physical & Work Environment:
- Ability to perform physical labor and operate heavy machinery in outdoor conditions.
- Exposure to loud noise, fumes, and adverse weather.
- May require occasional weekend/holiday availability or on-call rotation.
