The Business of Business, the media arm of Thinknum, is hiring a data writer to join its growing team. Here’s what we’re looking for:

A passion for working with data to tell impactful business stories

Not only do you love working with data, you have a knack for seeing a story in the numbers. You can combine your fluency with code and technique with a storyteller’s craft and sensibility. You’re also brimming with ideas, and eager to collect more data and collaborate with our team of developers, designers, and writers to create stories that have value and change or unlock new understandings of how business, industry, and the economy really work.

At The Business of Business, you’ll have access to an industry-leading set of alternative data and powerful tools to work with it. And you’ll be part of a team that eats, breathes, and sleeps thinking about how to use data in the same ways you do. It’s a huge competitive advantage for the right person to take advantage of.

The ability to create a cohesive story package

First and foremost, whether it’s your own story idea, or one you’re working on with a partner or team, you have a vision for how the pieces of a great story come together. Sometimes it really is just a chart and a few sentences. But other times it’s a series of charts or data, the proper animated visualization, just the right explanatory writing linking trends and ideas together, or maybe even a video or audio explanation. Whatever the story idea is, you’re excited and eager to help craft it as a package -- with the support and help of your colleagues when needed.  It’s not just that you love this stuff, but you love helping others understand it, too. You’re detail oriented, and a freak about the quality of what you put your name (and our name) on.

A sense of vision and possibility

We want to work with someone who has an active imagination when it comes to thinking up data-driven ideas and how to present them. We want you to cajole people into giving you what you need to tell the story you want to tell—or figure out how to get it anyway. You’re a self-starter, brimming with ideas and eager to discuss how to bring them to life.

An all-hands mentality

We’re a startup. That means roles and responsibilities shift in ways large and small. Our goal is to grow, and we need people who are willing to jump on tasks that they see as opportunities for us without being asked. But…

Be comfortable being accountable and responsible

We also need you to check-in, tell us what you’re doing, accept feedback, both praise and critical, and be OK with working on an editorial team. Even though you’ll have a particular unique set of skills, this isn’t a job for a lone wolf. There are clear metrics for daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly goals. You should be comfortable objectively evaluating yourself against them.
