The Packaging Engineer will be a key member of the FIJI® Water Strategic Sourcing & Supply Chain group.  The group's mission is to drive profitable sales growth by driving down cost of goods by leading strategic sourcing projects and continuous innovation of packaging applications.  The position will be the subject matter expert for packaging materials and will be dedicated engineer for FIJI® Water, Justin Winery and Landmark Winery.  In this role, you will be responsible for flawless execution of packaging development, procurement and qualification.  Included in this role are the proposal, evaluation and execution of cost saving initiatives.

Job Description

Strategic sourcing and vendor management (40%)

  • Work with strategic sourcing to develop requirements for RFPs
  • Write & perform trial protocols for vendor qualification & commissioning
  • Develop, grow and maintain network of qualified suppliers of all primary and secondary packaging materials (i.e. PET, rPET HDPE, Corrugated, Flexible packaging, Glass, Closures, etc.)
  • Work with quality assurance & control to ensure raw material performance prior to and during production execution
  • Stay up to date with new packaging innovations/technology and recommend cost saving opportunities
  • Attend trainings & packaging shows to grow industry knowledge

Product development and packaging innovation (30%)

  • Continuously seek innovative ideas to deliver cost savings and efficiencies without compromising quality
  • Provide management team with accurate packaging information for developing cost estimates and budgetary plans for potential new products
  • Work closely with marketing, product development and operations to develop comprehensive work plans to support new product launches and new vendor qualifications
  • Act as the liaison between the vendor and product development/design team for approvals and communicating critical information
  • Develop strong working relationships with the plant and collaborate on proper testing and material qualification procedures
  • Write & perform trial protocol for new product/package development qualification & commissioning
  • Write comprehensive trial report including trial flow, specification testing data, and technical recommendation
  • Ensure all new packaging is fully tested and manufacturing processes are validated and documented 
  • Develop SOPs for new product development and implementation 

Projects (20%)

  • Lead various ad hoc packaging related projects.
  • Lead packaging project meetings to provide updates to plant and sourcing teams
  • Support & lead optimization projects for FIJI Water, Justin Winery, Landmark Winery, & Lewis Cellars
  • Provide support to suppliers to improve their packaging quality standards and follow our specs.
  • Provide support to FIJI Water engineering consultants on capital projects
  • Maintain specifications of all packaging and raw materials (10%)
  • Develop and maintain detailed specification documents for all packaging materials which include technical drawings, testing procedures, AQLs, specs tolerances, shipping formats, current artwork.
  • Be the gatekeeper of all current versions of specifications, packaging drawings, die lines, etc. and ensure 100% accuracy always
  • Develop a Raw Material Inspection Process to validate the quality of the inbound packaging materials before being used in production.
  • Coordinate and attend vendor press checks to ensure print quality and accuracy on critical packaging runs
  • Review and approve all artwork changes to ensure 100% accuracy
  • Define and evaluate the Finished goods pallet and container configuration
  • Ensure conformance to customer packaging requirements and stay up-to-date on requirement changes

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of packaging science experience
  • Knowledge in flexible and secondary packaging
  • BS/BA in packaging engineering or business related field
  • Knowledge of printing technology
  • Knowledge of direct-to-consumer packaging practices
  • Knowledge of and experience performing ISTA & ASTM package testing
  • Experience with packaging equipment related all materials mentioned above
  • Experience working with and communicating technical information to designers
  • Strong relationship building and communication skills
  • Ability to present information in a clear and concise format to all levels of the organization
  • Excellent project management skills, especially in cross function team settings
  • High attention to detail is a must
  • High level of proficiency in Excel and Power Point
  • Oracle experience a plus
  • Estimated Travel (International & Domestic) - 10-15%
  • COVID vaccination will be required for this position unless candidate has a legally valid exemption
